Intercalate Socks by Stariel Knits

What Is Being Made

Intercalate is a pair of knitted socks featuring an innovative cable design that incorporates purl stitches between knit stitches in a braided cable pattern. The name references the concept of intercalation—inserting or interleaving elements between others, such as a leap day in a calendar or molecules in chemistry. This design principle is translated into the sock's stitch structure, where a purl stitch is strategically placed between the knits of a braided cable to create visual interest and textural variation.

Sizes and Finished Measurements

This pattern is offered in two sizes to accommodate different leg proportions:

  • Small/Medium: Leg circumference of 8 inches
  • Medium/Large: Leg circumference of 10 inches

Knitting Techniques Used

The Intercalate socks employ several intermediate-level knitting techniques. The primary technique is cable knitting, which involves crossing groups of stitches over one another to create a braided or twisted appearance. The pattern specifically uses a front cross cable technique, which requires slipping stitches onto a cable needle and working stitches in a specific sequence to achieve the desired cable direction and texture. Additionally, the pattern incorporates stockinette stitch as the base fabric, which provides a smooth, classic foundation for the cable detail.

Stitches and Stitch Details

The sock pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined in a specialized arrangement:

  • Knit stitch: Forms the primary structure of the cable pattern
  • Purl stitch: Inserted between knit stitches in the braided cable to create the intercalation effect and add textural contrast
  • Stockinette stitch: Used for the main body of the sock leg, creating a smooth, elastic fabric ideal for sock construction
  • Front Cross cable: A special stitch technique that involves slipping 3 stitches onto a cable needle and crossing them over subsequent stitches to form the braided cable structure
  • Through back loop (tbl): A stitch variation noted in the pattern abbreviations, allowing for twisted stitches when needed

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Intercalate socks are designed to be worked with high-quality sock-weight yarn and appropriately sized needles for sock knitting.

Primary Yarn Option: Three Fates Yarns BFL Platinum Sock, a durable blend of 75% superwash Blue Faced Leicester wool and 25% nylon. This yarn provides 436 yards (400 meters) per 100-gram skein and offers excellent elasticity and durability for socks. The pattern calls for 1 skein in the color Lexington Green for either size.

Rib Variation Yarn Option: Dream In Color Smooshy, composed of 100% superwash merino wool. This yarn yields 450 yards (411 meters) per 113-gram skein and is shown in the color Cocoa Kiss. One skein is required for the rib variation for either size.

Needles: The pattern recommends US #1 (2.25mm) needles. Knitters may choose between a set of double-point needles or a 29 to 40-inch circular needle worked using the magic loop method, depending on personal preference. Needle size should be selected to achieve the stated gauge of 30 stitches and 48 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch.

Additional Supplies: A yarn needle for weaving in ends, optional stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, and a cable needle for working the front cross cable technique.

Pattern Difficulty and Skill Level

Intercalate is classified as an intermediate-level knitting pattern. While it does not require advanced techniques, the cable work and the coordination of multiple stitch types demand solid foundational knitting skills and familiarity with cable techniques. Knitters comfortable with stockinette stitch, cable crosses, and working on small-circumference needles will find this pattern approachable and rewarding.
