Product Description
Here's my take on the classic hexagon sweater pattern!
I've made it as easy as possible, with minimal ends and seams, plus by adding the sleeves directly onto each hexagon you don't have to figure out how the hexagon turns into a sweater - the sleeves do it for you.
It is designed as a loose-fitting sweater for little ones, perfect over some leggings for a trip to the park.

This downloadable PDF pattern produces a charming toddler sweater sized for ages 0-3, featuring a unique hexagon construction technique that creates visual interest while remaining accessible to newer crocheters.
What is Being Made
This pattern creates a complete toddler sweater with a distinctive geometric hexagon design. The sweater is sized specifically for infants and toddlers in the 0-3 age range, making it an ideal project for creating handmade garments for young children.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Impossible Hexagon Sweater employs fundamental crochet construction methods suitable for beginners. The pattern utilizes a systematic approach to building the sweater pieces, incorporating techniques that allow crafters to understand basic garment shaping and assembly. The hexagon motif construction is the signature element of this design, creating an optical illusion effect through careful stitch placement and arrangement.
Stitches Used
- Chain (ch) – foundational stitch used to create the base of the pattern
- Single Crochet (sc) – basic stitch providing structure and density
- Standing Single Crochet – technique for starting new sections without a slip stitch join
- Double Crochet (dc) – primary stitch used throughout the sweater for the main fabric
- Double Crochet 3 Together (dc3tog) – decrease stitch used for shaping
- Slip Stitch (slst) – joining stitch for connecting rounds and sections
Materials and Tools Required
The Impossible Hexagon Sweater pattern calls for DK weight yarn, with the toddler size requiring approximately 2 x 100g skeins. The designer used Stylecraft Wondersoft DK and Regatta yarns in the sample garment. A 4mm crochet hook is recommended for working with DK yarn at the specified tension. Additional materials include 3 stitch markers for tracking pattern sections, a yarn needle for weaving in ends and assembling pieces, and scissors for cutting yarn.
Tension and Gauge
The pattern specifies a tension of 10cm equals 10 rows of 19 double crochet stitches. Achieving proper gauge is essential for creating a sweater that fits correctly in the toddler size range, making it important to work a gauge swatch before beginning the project.
Skill Level
This pattern is classified as beginner level, making it an excellent choice for crocheters new to garment construction or those seeking to expand their skills with a manageable project. The straightforward stitch selection and clear construction method allow beginners to successfully complete a wearable garment.
