Imogene Dish Towel by Cluck Cluck Boots
What Is Being Made
The Imogene is a knitted kitchen towel designed by Cluck Cluck Boots. This practical home accessory measures 15 inches wide by 18 inches long, making it an ideal size for everyday kitchen use. The towel combines functionality with decorative texture, created entirely through knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters.
Yarn and Materials
This project requires approximately 245 yards of worsted weight yarn. The pattern specifies Knit Picks Dishie yarn, which comes in 190-yard / 100-gram balls, meaning you will need just over one ball to complete the towel. The colorway used in the sample is Swan. Worsted weight yarn provides excellent absorbency and durability for kitchen towels while remaining easy to work with.
Needles and Equipment
The Imogene towel is worked on 4.0mm / US 6 needles. You have flexibility in your needle choice: use either 24-inch circular needles or straight needles for the main body of the towel. When working with circular needles, you will work back and forth rather than in the round. Additionally, 4.0mm / US 6 double-pointed needles (DPNs) are required for creating the loop detail.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Imogene towel employs fundamental knitting stitches and techniques appropriate for an intermediate skill level. The pattern begins with a long-tail cast on method, which creates a sturdy, elastic edge ideal for towels.
The main body features a repeating stitch pattern that alternates between knit and purl stitches to create visual texture and interest. The core stitches used are:
- Knit (K) — the basic knit stitch that forms the foundation of the fabric
- Purl (P) — the reverse of the knit stitch, used to create dimensional texture
The pattern structure begins with 6 rows of garter stitch (knit every row) to establish a stable foundation. The body then transitions into a multi-row repeating pattern that combines knit and purl stitches in specific sequences. Each pattern row is worked across 68 cast-on stitches, with 4 edge stitches in garter stitch on each side to frame the design and create neat selvage edges. The interior stitches follow a rhythmic K2, P2 or P2, K2 pattern with variations including single purl stitches (P1) interspersed with knit stitches, creating a textured surface that enhances both the visual appeal and the functional texture of the towel.
A loop detail is incorporated into the design, constructed using the double-pointed needles to create a functional hanging feature.
Skill Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the stitches themselves are basic, the pattern requires comfort with reading knitting instructions, maintaining consistent tension across multiple rows, and managing stitch counts. The repeating pattern sequences demand attention to detail but provide an excellent opportunity to develop pattern-reading skills.
