Product Description

Ever since I designed my Hap Cowl pattern I have thought about incorporating the traditional Hap outer motif in a yoke. You knit the body as sleeves as normal from the bottom up, join, work shaping and then just before you begin the chart you turn the knitting inside out and its worn with the reverse side on the outside, this emulates the garter stitch element of a hap with a bit more structure from the reverse stocking stitch. You can work the yoke in the round by purling every alternate row or (like me) work the yoke back and forth and seam at the end.

Hap Yoke by Ella Gordon

What is Being Made

The Hap Yoke is a knitted sweater featuring a traditional Hap-inspired yoke construction. This pullover design is available in nine sizes ranging from 32 to 48 inches bust measurement, with lengths varying from 15 to 21 inches depending on size. The sweater is designed to be worn with approximately 1 inch of positive ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit.

Design Concept and Construction Method

This pattern incorporates the traditional Hap outer motif into a yoke design, building upon the designer's previous Hap Cowl pattern. The construction method is distinctive: knitters work the body and sleeves in the conventional manner from bottom up, then join the pieces together. Before beginning the charted yoke pattern, the knitting is turned inside out and worn with the reverse side facing outward. This unconventional finishing technique emulates the garter stitch texture characteristic of traditional Hap garments while adding structural definition through reverse stocking stitch on the worn-facing side.

Knitting Techniques

The Hap Yoke employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginner-level knitters. The body and sleeves are constructed using standard bottom-up shaping methods. Knitters have flexibility in yoke construction: the yoke can be worked in the round by purling every alternate row to create a smooth circular fabric, or worked back and forth flat with seaming at the end, as the designer prefers. The pattern includes shaping before the charted yoke section begins, allowing the garment to transition smoothly from the body to the fitted yoke area.

Stitches Used

  • Stocking stitch – used for the main body and sleeves
  • Reverse stocking stitch – creates the structured texture on the worn-facing side of the yoke
  • Garter stitch – the traditional Hap element emulated through the reversed construction method
  • Charted colorwork – the traditional Hap outer motif is worked from a chart in the yoke section

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Hap Yoke is designed to be knitted with Jamieson & Smith 2ply yarn, a traditional choice for Fair Isle and Hap knitting. The pattern specifies 4-ply yarn weight, making this an ideal project for those working with fingering or lace-weight yarns. The use of 4-ply yarn creates a lightweight, breathable fabric suitable for layering or wearing across seasons. Knitters will need appropriate needles for 4-ply yarn, typically in the range of US 0-3 (1.5-3.25mm), though exact needle size should be confirmed by achieving the pattern's specified gauge.

Sizing and Fit Details

The pattern provides comprehensive sizing information across nine sizes. Underarm circumference ranges from 10.25 to 12.5 inches, while yoke depth varies from 7 to 9.75 inches to accommodate different body proportions. Sleeve length is consistent at approximately 17 to 19 inches across sizes. This range of options ensures that knitters of various body types can find an appropriate fit for this beginner-friendly design.

Skill Level

Rated as a beginner-level knitting project, the Hap Yoke is accessible to newer knitters while introducing them to traditional Fair Isle colorwork techniques and the distinctive construction method of Hap garments. The pattern's straightforward shaping and charted motif provide an excellent foundation for developing colorwork skills.
