Product Description

“Gesa” is a really easy-to-knit triangular shawl, worked from one edge to the other. You start with casting on 3 sts only and shape the triangle by simple increases and decreases. I worked a quite small shawl, but it’s very easy to increase the measurement to your desire. So, just knit until there’s no yarn left :-)

The slip stitch patterns are always worked with one color at the time, The patterns are charted, but the charts are not really necessary, if you are familiar with adapting patterns to increases and decreases.

Materials:

4 shades of any yarn that fits ths yardage of 435 per 100 g. You need 1 skein of each color (for my shawl I even needed only 50 g of each color).

US 4 (3,5 mm) circular needles

Tapestry needles

Gauge24 sts and 44 rows = 4” (10 x 10 cm) in garter stitch after blocking

Gesa Slip Stitch Shawl by Rita Maassen

What Is Being Made

Gesa is a slip stitch shawl designed by Rita Maassen, a knitwear designer. This triangular shawl measures approximately 65 inches (165 cm) in length and 14 inches (35 cm) in height, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or draping. The design showcases colorwork techniques through the strategic use of slip stitches, creating visual interest and texture without the complexity of traditional stranded colorwork.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is created using the knitting craft. The primary technique featured in Gesa is the slip stitch method, which allows knitters to work with multiple yarn colors while keeping the construction process straightforward. Slip stitch colorwork is an excellent technique for beginners because it eliminates the need to manage multiple strands simultaneously, as is required in stranded knitting. Instead, knitters work with one color at a time, slipping stitches from the previous row to create the colorwork pattern. This approach produces a fabric with beautiful color transitions and visual depth while remaining manageable for less experienced knitters.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch pattern used in Gesa is garter stitch, which forms the foundation of the shawl. Garter stitch is created by knitting every row, producing a reversible, textured fabric with horizontal ridges. This stitch is ideal for beginners due to its simplicity and forgiving nature. The pattern also incorporates a selvedge stitch on right-side rows, which creates neat, finished edges that are easier to pick up or seam if needed.

Materials and Specifications

Gesa requires 4 shades of yarn in a 4-ply weight. The designer used handdyed yarn called "Tweed-Me!" from Buttjebeyy, which is composed of 92% wool and 8% rayon. Each shade requires one skein with a yardage of approximately 435 yards per 100 grams (400 meters per 100 grams). The four colors used in the original design are Hibiskus (main color), Blauholz (CC1), Blauholz-Mix (CC2), and Johannisbrot (CC3).

The project calls for US 4 (3.5 mm) circular needles, or any needle size necessary to achieve the correct gauge. Circular needles are recommended for this shawl construction, allowing for comfortable knitting of the larger piece.

Gauge and Finished Dimensions

The recommended gauge is 24 stitches and 44 rows equals 4 inches (10 x 10 cm) in garter stitch after blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements of 65 inches in length and 14 inches in height. Blocking the finished shawl will help even out the stitches and enhance the drape of the slip stitch colorwork.

Skill Level

Gesa is classified as a beginner level pattern, making it an accessible project for knitters new to colorwork techniques. The combination of simple garter stitch and slip stitch colorwork provides an excellent introduction to working with multiple colors without overwhelming complexity.
