Fur Trimmed Winter Outfit by Sylvia Schofield
Project Overview
This downloadable knitting pattern creates a charming fur-trimmed winter outfit designed for dolls and doll accessories. The design combines classic knitting techniques with decorative feather yarn accents to produce a sophisticated miniature garment suitable for intermediate-level knitters.
What Is Being Made
The pattern includes a winter coat featuring fur-trimmed detailing. The outfit is constructed as a complete ensemble piece, with the coat serving as the primary garment. The design incorporates button fastening at the front for authentic doll-sized clothing construction.
Techniques Used
- Casting on and casting off: Foundation and finishing techniques for creating stable edges
- Increases and decreases: Shaping methods including knitting into the front and back of the same stitch for increases, and knitting two stitches together for decreases
- Stitch holder application: Temporarily securing stitches during construction for later joining
- Multi-color knitting: Transitioning between white, navy blue, and light blue yarns, plus feather yarn for textured trim
- Bottom-up construction: Building the garment from the lower edge upward
Stitches Used
- Garter stitch: Created by knitting every row, producing a textured, reversible fabric
- Stocking stitch (stockinette stitch): Alternating knit and purl rows to create the smooth, classic knit fabric
- Yarn forward: Technique for creating decorative openings and texture variations
Materials Required
Yarn: Approximately 1 x 50-gram ball of Estelle rainbow feather long pile yarn or any feather yarn for the fur trim, combined with 80 grams of DK knitting yarn in white as the primary color, plus small quantities of navy blue and light blue yarn for accent details.
Needles and notions: One pair of size 8 UK (size 6 US / 4mm metric) knitting needles, selected to achieve a tension of 5 stitches to the inch. The pattern also requires 1 button for front coat fastening and a stitch holder for managing stitches during construction.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern requires competency with basic knitting techniques, color changes, and shaping methods. Knitters should be comfortable reading pattern abbreviations and managing multiple yarn weights and textures.
