Flower Scatter Embroidery Pattern by DMC – PAT0909

Flower Scatter (also titled Dispersion de Fleurs in French) is a free, downloadable PDF embroidery pattern from the DMC Library collection. Designed at an advanced difficulty level, this stunning needlework project features an artfully scattered arrangement of delicate flowers rendered entirely in crisp white thread, creating an elegant tonal, tone-on-tone embroidery piece. The finished design measures approximately 16.2 cm × 16.3 cm, making it a beautifully substantial project suitable for framing, decorating home textiles, or embellishing garments.

About the Design

The Flower Scatter pattern presents a loose, naturalistic scattering of floral motifs across the fabric surface. Rather than a rigid, symmetrical layout, the blooms are distributed in an organic, free-flowing arrangement that gives the finished piece a light and airy quality. The design is worked exclusively in white, relying entirely on the interplay of different stitch textures and thread weights to create depth, dimension, and visual interest — a hallmark of sophisticated hand embroidery technique.

The colour guide included in the PDF uses a lettered and numbered coding system (A1–A3, B1–B2, C2–C3, D3, E1–E2) to map each stitch type and thread size to specific areas of the design, allowing embroiderers to follow the diagram with precision.

Techniques and Stitches Used

This is a 3D embroidery project, meaning several of the stitches are worked to stand proud of the fabric surface, adding sculptural relief and tactile richness. Advanced embroiderers will find this pattern a rewarding challenge, as it combines multiple hand embroidery techniques simultaneously. The following stitches are used throughout the design:

  • Stem Stitch – A classic outline stitch worked in a continuous, overlapping manner to create smooth, rope-like lines. Ideal for rendering stems, tendrils, and curved outlines with a clean, polished finish.
  • Padded Stitch (Point de Plumetis) – A raised satin stitch technique where an initial layer of stitches is laid down first, then covered with a second layer worked in the opposite direction. This builds up a smooth, padded, three-dimensional surface that catches the light beautifully.
  • Lazy Daisy Stitch (Point de Bouclette) – A detached chain stitch worked in individual loops to form petal shapes. Each loop is anchored at its tip, creating the characteristic teardrop petal form that is perfect for floral motifs.
  • French Knot (Point de Noeud) – A raised, rounded knot stitch formed by wrapping the thread around the needle before inserting it back into the fabric. French knots add delicate textural detail, commonly used for flower centres and decorative dotting.
  • Bullion Stitch (Point de Poste) – An advanced coiled stitch where the thread is wrapped multiple times around the needle to create a raised, cylindrical or curved bar of thread. Bullion stitches are particularly effective for forming rose buds, petals, and other dimensional floral elements.

The combination of padded stitch, bullion stitch, and lazy daisy stitch in particular contributes to the three-dimensional quality of the finished embroidery, with different areas of the design sitting at varying heights above the fabric surface.

Materials Required

The pattern is designed specifically for use with DMC Coton Perlé thread, a twisted, lustrous pearl cotton thread that is non-divisible and produces a beautiful sheen. Three different weights of Coton Perlé are used to vary the visual weight and texture of different stitches across the design:

  • DMC Coton Perlé Art 115 Size 3 – The heaviest weight used, creating bold, prominent stitches for larger design elements. One skein of Blanc (white) is required.
  • DMC Coton Perlé Art 115 Size 5 – A medium-weight thread offering a balance of coverage and delicacy. One skein of Blanc is required.
  • DMC Coton Perlé Art 116 Size 8 – The finest weight
