Product Description

The Emory sweater is gender neutral, with a playfully abstract yoke and relaxed fit through the sleeves and body. Emory is sized for children ages 1-10 years.

I gave Emory the same attention to detail that I give my adult sweater designs. Short rows below the yoke create a comfortable fitting neckline. The hemline features a bit of simple colorwork and the ribbing is knit using the contrast color. Recommended techniques such as an alternating cable cast on and sewn bind off are optional, but make for a beautifully finished heirloom-quality sweater if you choose to include them.

Emory Stranded Colorwork Sweater by Samantha Guerin

What is Being Made

Emory is a children's pullover sweater designed by Samantha Guerin, available in five sizes ranging from ages 1-2 through 8-10. The finished bust circumference ranges from 22 inches for the smallest size to 29 inches for the largest size. This is a downloadable knitting pattern intended for personal use, featuring a classic yoke construction that works from the top down.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern requires intermediate knitting skills beyond basic stockinette stitch. The primary techniques featured in Emory include:

  • Stranded colorwork: A two-color knitting method where yarn colors are carried across the back of the work to create color patterns on the fabric surface
  • Short rows: A shaping technique that involves turning the work before completing a full row, used to add depth and contour to specific areas
  • Picking up stitches: The method of creating new stitches from existing edges, essential for seamless construction and adding ribbing or other edgings
  • Knitting in the round: Circular needle knitting that creates seamless, tubular fabric without side seams

Stitches and Construction

Emory is primarily constructed using stockinette stitch, the fundamental knit fabric created by alternating knit and purl rows (or all knit rounds when working circularly). The stockinette base provides a smooth canvas for the stranded colorwork pattern. The yoke shaping combines the colorwork technique with short-row shaping to create a fitted shoulder and upper body area before the body and sleeves are worked downward.

Yarn and Materials

This pattern is designed for sport weight yarn, a lightweight yarn category suitable for delicate, drapey garments. The original pattern calls for Plucky Knitter 'Primo Sport' in two colorways: Merry Berry for the main color (MC) and Pinehurst for the contrast color (CC). Primo Sport is a blend of 75% superwash merino, 20% cashmere, and 5% nylon, offering softness, durability, and easy care.

Yardage requirements vary by size. The smallest size (ages 1-2) requires 410 yards of main color and 150 yards of contrast color, while the largest size (ages 8-10) requires 540 yards of main color and 170 yards of contrast color. Knitters may substitute any similar sport weight yarn with comparable yardage and gauge.

Needles and Notions

Construction requires US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles in two lengths: a 16-inch circular needle for working the yoke and a 24-inch circular needle for the body. A gauge of 22 stitches and 28 rounds per 4 inches in stockinette stitch, measured after blocking, ensures proper fit across all sizes.

Additional notions needed include removable stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and seaming if necessary, and waste yarn for holding stitches during construction. These standard knitting supplies support the stranded colorwork and short-row techniques used throughout the pattern.
