Product Description
Elephant Afghan & Baby Cocoon, #220
Charming elephants dance across these delightful designs, made for all ages. They’re crocheted using my signature sc in back lp and dc in front lp of st 2 rows below…similar in technique to the classic Navajo and Trail of Tears afghans. You alternate row colors so you are only working with one color at a time. Clever placement of the dropped dc stitch forms the design. It’s similar to Mosaic Knitting, but done in MOSAIC CROCHET! Written instructions plus optional graphs are given for baby and child-size afghans plus a baby cocoon made from baby, sport or DK yarn, and an adult size afghan made using worsted weight yarn. See my website for a how-to video showing just how easy this stitch is to do! Cocoon size approximatelyi 18” x 19”; fits newborn to 3 months.
Elephant Afghan and Baby Cocoon by Shady Lane Crochet Designs
Project Overview
This downloadable crochet pattern set from Shady Lane Crochet Designs, designed by Carol Hegar, includes instructions for creating two complementary projects: an Elephant Afghan and a Baby Cocoon. Both pieces are worked using crochet techniques and are suitable for intermediate-level crafters looking to expand their skills with structured, multi-piece designs.
Elephant Afghan
The Elephant Afghan is a unique crochet project that employs a distinctive construction method. Unlike traditional afghans worked in continuous rows, this design requires working each row separately, with approximately 3 to 4 inches of yarn left at each end of every row. This technique creates a specific structural quality and visual effect that sets this afghan apart from conventional blanket patterns. The separate-row construction method allows for easier color management and precise shaping.
Color Work: All color changes occur at the beginning of rows, ensuring that you work with only one color at a time. This approach simplifies the crochet process by eliminating complex color-carrying techniques and reducing the need to manage multiple yarn strands simultaneously.
Baby Cocoon
The Baby Cocoon is a complementary project included in this pattern set, designed to coordinate with the Elephant Afghan. This piece provides a practical and cozy option for newborns and infants, combining functionality with the decorative appeal of the coordinating afghan.
Yarn Weight and Materials
These projects accommodate multiple yarn weights, offering flexibility in material selection:
- Aran weight yarn
- Worsted weight yarn
- DK weight yarn
- Sport weight yarn
The pattern is compatible with standard crochet hooks appropriate for your chosen yarn weight, allowing you to customize the finished size and drape of both the afghan and cocoon based on your material selection.
Skill Level and Techniques
Rated as an intermediate difficulty project, this pattern assumes familiarity with fundamental crochet stitches and techniques. The intermediate classification reflects the structured approach required for the separate-row construction method and the color-change management throughout the design. Crafters should be comfortable reading crochet patterns and executing consistent stitchwork to achieve the intended finished appearance.
Pattern Format
This pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF file, making it immediately accessible for digital reference during your crochet work. The PDF format allows for easy printing or viewing on devices while you craft.
