Drifting Stripes Socks by Kathrin Gerstendoerfer
What is Being Made
Drifting Stripes is a toe-up sock pattern designed by independent knitwear designer Kathrin Gerstendoerfer. This downloadable knitting pattern creates custom-fitted socks that can be adjusted to multiple sizes, making it suitable for various foot dimensions and preferences.
Craft and Construction Method
This pattern uses the toe-up construction technique, which begins knitting from the toe and progresses toward the cuff. This method offers several practical advantages: it allows knitters to try on the sock during construction for a perfect fit, eliminates the need for grafting at the toe closure, and provides flexibility in adjusting sock length before committing yardage to the leg portion.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Drifting Stripes pattern employs intermediate-level knitting techniques suitable for knitters with foundational skills. Key techniques and stitches used include:
- Knit (k) and purl (p) stitches as the foundation of the fabric
- Ssk (slip, slip, knit) – slip one stitch as if to knit, slip the next stitch as if to knit, then knit the two stitches together through the back loop for left-leaning decreases
- K2tog (knit two together) – a right-leaning decrease that combines two stitches into one
- W&t (wrap and turn) and wrapped stitches (W) – short-row shaping techniques that create the heel and foot shaping without visible holes
- Slip stitches (sl) – used for edge definition and stitch manipulation
Needles and Materials
The pattern is worked on 2.25mm (US 1) needles with KnitPicks Felici yarn at 199 meters per 50 grams. The specific yardage requirement depends on the chosen sock size. A darning needle is the only additional notions required, used for weaving in ends and any finishing work.
Construction Options and Customization
The Drifting Stripes pattern accommodates two needle techniques: traditional 2-needle construction and double-pointed needle (DPN) construction, with DPN instructions provided in brackets throughout the pattern. This flexibility allows knitters to choose their preferred method.
The pattern includes sizing adjustments for customization. To downsize socks, knitters can work on smaller needles to achieve a denser gauge, or remove up to 4 stitches from the needles—specifically the first and last stitch on needle 1 (or needles 1 and 2 when using DPNs), plus two stitches from the middle section. To upsize socks, stitches can be added at the beginning and end of needle 1 (or needles 1 and 2 with DPNs), providing straightforward scaling options for different foot sizes.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is designed for knitters who are comfortable with basic stitches and ready to learn short-row shaping and sock-specific construction methods. The toe-up approach and wrap-and-turn techniques provide valuable skill-building for sock knitting.
