Product Description
These eggs are great for Cosplay, Easter eggs or unique home decor! These make a lovely display with an assortment of colors displayed in a basket. This design is inspired by decades of Fantasy and Science Fiction dragons. It was very difficult to work out the mathematics of the pattern for the eggs are they are symmetrical from side to side but not from top to bottom. The scales are leaf shaped chain maille aluminum scales (which are available for purchase from us in 10 colors). The pattern includes instructions for 3 sizes of eggs. The small (4 inch egg) requires 122 scales, medium (6 inch egg) requires 236 scales and large (8 inch egg) requires 348 scales.
The egg form was purchased at a hobby store. Eggs are available in paper, foam and plastic. I like the paper ones as I can paint them with a thin coat of watered down acrylic paint to best match the yarn and scale colors. The egg form will show through in spots so you want a similar color match. Be sure to match your egg to the
Dragon Scale Eggs Knitting Pattern
Project Overview
Dragon Scale Eggs by Colette Smith (Pattern #920) is an advanced knitting design creating three-dimensional decorative eggs in three distinct sizes. These eggs are versatile pieces suitable for cosplay costumes, Easter displays, or unique home decor arrangements. The design draws inspiration from decades of fantasy and science fiction dragon aesthetics, making them particularly appealing for enthusiasts of speculative fiction and fantasy gaming communities.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces knitted dragon scale eggs available in three graduated sizes: small (4 inches), medium (6 inches), and large (8 inches). Each egg features a symmetrical side-to-side design with scaled detailing that creates an authentic dragon egg appearance. The eggs work beautifully as individual display pieces or as an assorted collection arranged together in a basket or decorative setting.
Construction Technique and Materials
The Dragon Scale Eggs pattern utilizes a specialized construction method combining knitting with decorative chain maille aluminum scales. The egg form itself is a purchased base available from hobby stores in multiple material options including paper, foam, and plastic. The pattern designer recommends paper egg forms, which can be painted with thinned acrylic paint to coordinate with both yarn and scale colors.
Scale Requirements by Size
- Small egg (4 inches): Requires 122 leaf-shaped chain maille aluminum scales
- Medium egg (6 inches): Requires 236 leaf-shaped chain maille aluminum scales
- Large egg (8 inches): Requires 348 leaf-shaped chain maille aluminum scales
Design Complexity
This advanced-level pattern required extensive mathematical calculation to achieve its distinctive symmetry. The eggs are symmetrical from side to side but asymmetrical from top to bottom, creating a naturalistic dragon egg silhouette. This asymmetrical top-to-bottom design adds complexity to the construction process, making this project suitable for experienced knitters.
Material Coordination
Successful completion of these eggs depends on thoughtful color coordination between the knitted yarn, the decorative aluminum scales (available in 10 color options), and the painted egg form base. Since the egg form shows through in spots, matching similar color tones between the yarn and base creates a cohesive, professional appearance.
Craft Application
As a knitting project, Dragon Scale Eggs combines traditional knitting techniques with decorative embellishment using chain maille aluminum scales. This hybrid approach creates dimensional texture and visual interest while maintaining the structural integrity of the knitted base.
