What is Being Made

This is a knitting pattern for Little Red Riding Hood Layla, a charming handmade doll standing 26cm tall. The doll features the classic storybook character with distinctive red coloring and detailed construction. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished stuffed doll suitable for display or as a gift, with careful attention to safety considerations for toy-giving purposes.

Knitting Techniques Used

The pattern employs flat knitting construction, meaning all pieces are knitted flat on straight needles rather than in the round. This approach allows for easier stitch management and shaping during the building process. The doll is assembled using traditional seaming methods, with Mattress Stitch and Whip Stitch techniques used to join the various knitted components together seamlessly. The pattern includes instructions for pom-pom creation using pencils as makeshift tools, adding textured details to the finished doll.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch used throughout this pattern is stockinette stitch, the foundational knit fabric that creates a smooth, classic appearance ideal for doll construction. The gauge is 26 stitches and 34 rows over 4 inches (10cm) in stockinette stitch, though the pattern notes that tension does not need to be exact for this project. Long tail cast on is the recommended casting method for all pieces unless otherwise specified in the instructions.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

This pattern uses sport weight yarn in multiple colors to bring the character to life. The yarn quantities needed are minimal:

  • Red yarn - less than 25g (approximately 29 yards)
  • Yellow yarn - less than 25g (approximately 23 yards)
  • Blue yarn - less than 25g (approximately 17 yards)
  • Black yarn - less than 25g (approximately 21 yards)

The total yarn requirement is less than 50g across all colors, making this an economical project for using up yarn scraps.

Needles and Tools

Construction requires two pairs of 2.25mm (US 1) straight knitting needles, which are appropriately sized for sport weight yarn. Additional tools include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming, sewing pins for holding pieces during assembly, and 2 stitch markers for tracking pattern sections. A holder needle is used to hold stitches temporarily during construction.

Embellishments and Finishing Materials

The doll's facial features are created using 2 beads measuring 6mm for the eyes, providing a secure and defined gaze. Two 1cm buttons add decorative detail to the finished doll. Toy filling (less than 50g) is used to stuff the doll pieces, creating dimension and shape. A piece of cardboard measuring 18x20cm serves as a base or support structure during construction. The pattern also incorporates 2 pencils as tools for creating pom-pom details, though any similarly-sized cylindrical objects may be substituted.

Design Considerations

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques. The designer emphasizes safety considerations, particularly noting that if the doll is intended as a gift for a child, careful attention should be paid to the choice of toy eyes and other small components to ensure they are securely attached and age-appropriate.
