Product Description
I created these mittens to use up the remnants of some yarn I splurged on. They would make a lovely gift; knitted in a luxurious yarn such as alpaca, bison or cashmere, they are warm yet light enough to wear while typing (or holding a bridal bouquet!). The lace pattern is a 6 stitch, 2 row repeat and is easy to memorize.
All proceeds from the sale of this pattern will be donated to March of Dimes, dedicated to improving the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.
Pattern is for magic loop, but can easily be converted to dpns if preferred.
recommended number of rows to increase for thumb gusset should end with row 38 rather than row 36
Diminutive Mitts by MsChris
What Is Being Made
Diminutive Mitts are delicate, fitted mittens designed by Chris Abbott as an elegant solution for using up luxury yarn remnants. These one-size mittens accommodate hand widths from 6½ to 7½ inches (measured around the widest part) and are crafted to be warm yet lightweight enough for practical wear while typing or holding a bridal bouquet. The design emphasizes versatility and refined aesthetics, making them suitable as gifts or personal accessories.
Knitting Techniques
This knitting pattern employs the magic loop method on a circular needle, a technique that allows knitters to work small circumference projects like mittens using a single circular needle. The magic loop method is particularly useful for mittens, as it eliminates the need for double-pointed needles while maintaining even tension throughout the project. The pattern includes instructions for managing a thumb gusset, which creates shaping for the thumb opening and ensures a comfortable, well-fitted mitten. Knitters have the option to use a spare circular needle or waste yarn to hold thumb gusset stitches while working other sections.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The defining feature of Diminutive Mitts is a lace pattern with a 6 stitch, 2 row repeat. This repeating motif is designed to be easy to memorize, reducing the cognitive load during knitting and allowing crafters to work more intuitively. The lace pattern incorporates ribs of plain knit stitches every 6th stitch, which serve a dual purpose: they provide visual landmarks that help knitters quickly identify mistakes and they add structural stability to the delicate lace sections. The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations including knit (k), purl (p), and knit 2 together (k2tog), a decrease stitch that reduces stitch count by one.
The lace pattern itself is notably stretchy, which is why the gauge measurement specifically notes that stitches and rows should not be stretched when measuring. This elasticity contributes to the mittens' comfortable fit across the specified hand width range.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
Diminutive Mitts require 90 to 120 yards of fingering or light-fingering weight yarn (4-ply), making them an ideal stash-busting project for knitters with yarn remnants. The pattern designer recommends luxury yarns such as alpaca, bison, or cashmere for optimal results, as these fibers provide exceptional warmth and softness while remaining lightweight. The small yardage requirement makes this an accessible project for experimenting with premium fibers.
The needle requirements include a US 4 (3.5mm) circular needle for the main knitting. Optional needles are suggested for binding off: 3.75mm or 4mm needles can be used to create a more elastic bind-off edge. Additional optional materials include a spare circular needle or waste yarn for temporarily holding thumb gusset stitches during construction.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 8 stitches and 9 rows per 1 inch in the lace pattern when measured in an unstretched state. This gauge is critical for achieving the correct finished dimensions, as the lace pattern's natural elasticity means the mittens will stretch slightly during wear. The one-size design accommodates a range of hand widths, making these mittens suitable for most adult wearers.
Difficulty Level
Classified as an intermediate-level knitting project, Diminutive Mitts require familiarity with fundamental knitting techniques including the magic loop method, lace knitting, and shaping with decreases. The straightforward 6 stitch, 2 row repeat lace pattern and the visual guides provided by the plain knit ribs make the project manageable for knitters with some experience, though beginners may find the lace pattern and circular needle technique challenging.
