Product Description

This pattern was inspired by my latest Fibre Share partner Lise of Tre Liz. Her motto is:

“Color is power and fiber is our weapon!”

The pattern has instructions for both a worsted (5mm) slouchy hat and DK (3.5mm) convertible version. It can be knit with the words on the front and pattern on the back OR with just the pattern all around, you choose, the more colorful the better!

PLEASE check your gauge before you start as I tend to knit loose! If you have a favorite yarn you like to use with my other worsted weight color work pattern, it will also work with this one.

This pattern is for personal use only and may not be copied or redistributed. You may sell items made from this pattern with the pattern credit going back to Knits N Knacks on every listing/item. If you have any questions, feel me to email me.

Color Is Power Knit Hat by Athena Forbes

What Is Being Made

Color Is Power is an intermediate-level knit hat pattern designed by Athena Forbes for Knits N Knacks. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a striking hat that showcases colorwork as its defining feature. The design draws inspiration from fiber artist Lise of Tre Liz and her philosophy that "Color is power and fiber is our weapon," making this hat an ideal project for knitters looking to explore bold, intentional color work in their headwear.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs colorwork techniques to create visual impact. The design uses a chart-based approach where all stitches are knit stitches, worked right to left from bottom to top. For managing multiple colors within the same row, the pattern incorporates yarn wrapping techniques. Specifically, when a color block extends beyond 6 stitches in length, the non-working yarn is wrapped once around the working yarn to prevent long floats and maintain fabric integrity. This technique prevents the common issue of loose strands on the inside of colorwork knits and ensures a more professional finish.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Color Is Power hat is constructed primarily using knit stitches throughout the charted pattern sections. The pattern is chart-based, meaning knitters follow a visual grid to determine color placement and stitch placement row by row. This charted approach makes it accessible for intermediate knitters who are comfortable reading knitting charts and working with multiple colors in the same row.

Yarn and Materials

The pattern is designed to work with multiple yarn weights, offering flexibility for different yarn stash options. Available yarn weight options include DK weight, worsted weight, and heavy worsted weight. The worsted version pictured in the pattern uses Lion Brand Scarfie for the main color. Knitters will need appropriate needles sized for their chosen yarn weight to achieve proper gauge and fabric drape for the finished hat.

Pattern Details and Difficulty

Rated as an intermediate difficulty level, this pattern assumes knitters have foundational skills including the ability to read charts, manage multiple colors, and understand basic hat construction. The intermediate classification reflects the colorwork requirements and the need to manage yarn tension across color changes. This makes Color Is Power an excellent next-step project for knitters moving beyond simple stockinette hats into more complex, visually interesting designs.
