Bunny Cushion Cover by Mr. Kaplan

Project Overview

The Bunny Cushion Cover is a charming knitted cushion cover designed by Mr. Kaplan, created for people who appreciate kind and cheerful home décor. This intermediate-level knitting project produces a finished cushion cover measuring 35cm x 35cm, making it an ideal size for decorative throw pillows or accent cushions on sofas and beds.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a complete cushion cover featuring a bunny design. The finished piece is a square cushion cover with a 35cm x 35cm dimension that incorporates a decorative bunny motif. The cover is designed to be practical and functional, featuring a zippered closure for easy insertion and removal of the cushion insert.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Bunny Cushion Cover employs stranded knitting as its primary colorwork technique. Stranded knitting, also known as Fair Isle knitting, involves carrying two colors of yarn across the back of the work while knitting with the active color, creating intricate color patterns on the fabric surface. This technique allows the bunny design to be integrated seamlessly into the knitted fabric.

Additional techniques include increases using the KF&B (knit forward and back) method, which creates new stitches by knitting into both the front and back loops of a stitch. The pattern also utilizes standard cast-on and bind-off techniques to begin and finish the piece.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary stitch structure, created by alternating knit rows with purl rows to produce the smooth, flat fabric base for the cushion cover
  • KF&B (Knit Forward and Back): An increase stitch used to shape the bunny design elements within the stranded colorwork pattern
  • Cast On (CO): The foundation stitch used to create the initial stitches on the needles
  • Bind Off (BO): The finishing technique used to secure and complete the edges of the knitted fabric

Materials and Tools Required

The Bunny Cushion Cover is knitted using chunky weight yarn in two colors. The sample shown was created with Nako Lily yarn (100g = 180m, 100% Polyester), using Main Colour #2870 and Contrasting Colour #208, with 100g of each color required.

Knitting needles required include 3.50mm (US 4) Single Point Needles for the main knitting, and 3.50mm (US 4) Double Point Needles or Circular Needles (whichever is preferable for the knitter's technique). Additional materials needed are a 35cm zipper for the cushion closure, thread and needle for sewing in the zipper, a small amount of stuffing for the bunny tail detail, and a stitch marker to track pattern repeats.

Gauge and Tension

The pattern specifies a gauge of 15 stitches over 10cm when worked in chunky yarn with the specified needle size. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for the cushion cover to reach its intended 35cm x 35cm finished dimensions.

Skill Level

This project is rated as Intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle stranded colorwork techniques. The combination of two-color knitting, shaping with increases, and zipper insertion requires solid foundational skills and attention to pattern detail.

As reliable as ever.

The instructions on the pattern contained minor errors which were easy to correct. The intarsia bunny pattern chart was on its side and as I was unable to print the pattern off, this was also a minor glitch. The yarn recommended by LK was a different gauge than the yarn in the pattern so I had to make adjustments there too.
