Product Description
Originally designed as a 16"/40cm square cushion cover this has been a super popular pattern and I have been asked for more sizes, so here it is with 5 options (updated 2018)
• 16”/40cm square • 16”x12”/ 40x30cm rectangular boudoir/ travel pillow • 20”/50cm square • 24”/60cm square • 24”x12”/60x30cm rectangular lumbar pillow
All are knit using a bulky/#5 yarn and intersperse blackberry stitch with rope cables. The envelope closure is secured with buttons allowing for easy removal to change your decor or for hand washing. Both front and back are visually appealing. Just turn over for a different look.
If you are familiar with using a cable needle and working buttonholes you should have no trouble with this pattern.
Blackberry Cable Pillow Cover Knitting Pattern
What is Being Made
The Blackberry Cable Pillow Cover is a knitted cushion cover designed by LadyshipDesigns, available in five distinct sizes to suit various pillow types and décor needs. This pattern provides instructions for creating both square and rectangular pillow covers: a 16"/40cm square, a 16"x12"/40x30cm rectangular boudoir or travel pillow, a 20"/50cm square, a 24"/60cm square, and a 24"x12"/60x30cm rectangular lumbar pillow. Each cover features a button envelope closure, allowing for easy removal and washing or seasonal décor changes.
Construction Method
The pillow cover is knit as a single continuous piece using chunky or bulky weight yarn (#5/12ply). After completing the knitted fabric, the side seams are sewn together to form the finished cover. The button envelope closure design provides practical functionality while maintaining an elegant aesthetic.
Stitches and Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting pattern incorporates cable stitches as the primary decorative element, which is reflected in the design name. The cable work requires the use of a cable needle to create the characteristic twisted, rope-like texture that defines the Blackberry pattern. The pattern is suitable for knitters with intermediate experience who are comfortable working with cable techniques.
Materials Required
Needles: The pattern requires two pairs of needles in different sizes—5.5mm/US9/UK5 needles and 6.5mm/US10.5/UK3 needles—allowing for gauge adjustments and varied stitch work. A cable needle is also necessary for executing the cable stitches.
Yarn: Chunky or bulky weight yarn (#5/12ply) is used throughout. Yarn yardage requirements vary by size:
- 16"/40cm square: 360 yards/330 meters
- 16"x12"/40x30cm rectangular: 275 yards/255 meters
- 20"/50cm square: 555 yards/510 meters
- 24"/60cm square: 795 yards/725 meters
- 24"x12"/60x30cm rectangular: 415 yards/380 meters
The pattern recommends purchasing slightly extra yarn to ensure project completion and matching dye lots across all yarn balls or skeins.
Additional Materials: Large buttons measuring 1.5"/3.8cm in diameter are required for the envelope closure (3 buttons for smaller sizes, 4 buttons for the 20" square, and 5 buttons for the larger sizes). A large-eyed blunt sewing needle is needed for seaming the cover together and attaching buttons.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with cable techniques. The cable work requires attention to stitch manipulation and proper use of a cable needle, but the overall construction remains straightforward.
