Berroco Beryl – Knitted Colorblock Sweater Pattern by Amy Christoffers

The Berroco Beryl is a beautifully structured pullover sweater designed by Amy Christoffers and published by Berroco. This intermediate-level knitting pattern produces a relaxed, colorblock sweater worked in two pieces from side to side — a distinctive construction method that creates smooth, vertical color transitions across the body. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and is sized to fit a wide range of bodies, with finished bust measurements ranging from 37 to 76½ inches (94 to 194.5 cm), offering generous positive ease of 4 to 8 inches for a comfortable, modern fit.

What Is Being Made

Beryl is a pullover sweater featuring a striking two-color design. The garment is constructed in two main pieces worked from side to side, which means the knitting progresses horizontally across the body rather than from hem to shoulder. This side-to-side approach gives the colorblock sections a clean, vertical appearance when the sweater is worn. The finished sweater has a relaxed silhouette with lengths ranging from 21 to 30 inches depending on the size. The sample shown in the pattern is knitted in the 40-inch bust size.

Construction Techniques

  • Side-to-side construction: Both main pieces are worked from one side seam to the other, a technique that naturally lends itself to crisp vertical colorblocking without the need for complex intarsia or stranded colorwork.
  • Seamed construction: The two pieces are joined with seams, giving the finished garment structure and durability. Seaming also helps the sweater hold its shape over time.
  • Worked flat: The main body sections are knitted flat, back and forth in rows, which is essential to the side-to-side method and allows for precise color changes row by row.
  • Worked in the round: Certain sections — such as the neckline or cuffs — are worked in the round using circular or double-pointed needles, creating seamless, tidy edges.
  • Color changing technique: When transitioning between the two colors, the pattern instructs knitters to hold the yarn to the left and pick up the new color from underneath, twisting the yarns together to avoid holes at the color join. The C2 section is increased by one stitch every row during color changes, creating a smooth diagonal shift between colors.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch (St st): The primary stitch pattern used throughout the body of the sweater. Stockinette creates a smooth, classic fabric that showcases the colorblock design cleanly.
  • Ribbing: Implied through the use of smaller needles at the edges (a standard practice in Berroco patterns), typically used at cuffs and neckbands to create a neat, stretchy finish.
  • Increases: Shaping is achieved through strategic increases, particularly during the color change sections where the C2 color section grows by one stitch per row.

Gauge

The pattern calls for a gauge of 22 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch on the larger needle, measured after blocking. Achieving accurate gauge is especially important in a side-to-side construction, as row gauge directly affects the width of the finished garment.

Materials – Yarn

The pattern is designed for Berroco Vivo, a DK weight yarn sold in 100-gram balls. The design uses two colors:

  • C1: Berroco Vivo #3514 Dewdrop — required in quantities ranging from 2 to 4 balls depending on size.
  • C2: Berroco Vivo #3511 Breeze — required in quantities ranging from 2 to 4 balls depending on size.

Berroco Vivo is a smooth, well-spun DK weight yarn well suited to colorblock designs, as its consistent texture allows the color transitions to read clearly. The pattern notes that using the yarns
