Lovely pattern. I'll make it again!
Easy to follow, made up beautifully in Stylecraft Double knit.
Inspired by a sweater that I have, I realized that this open basketweave stitch would make a great baby blanket.
The pattern is written in a line by line format and includes a chart for the basketweave pattern which repeats over 8 rows. Using only knit and purl stitches this is a great pattern for a beginner knitter ready to take on a simple openwork pattern.
This blanket is knit in one piece, back and forth on a circular needle to accommodate the large number of stitches. The final size is 28" x 36" (70cm x 90cm). Instructions are provided on how to make the blanket larger or smaller.
A worsted weight/#4 yarn in cotton, cotton blend or acrylic is recommended, making for a beautiful soft and washable blanket perfect for crib, stroller or pram.
The Basketweave Baby Blanket is a knitted throw designed as an accessible introduction to lace stitch techniques for beginner knitters. This downloadable PDF pattern from LadyshipDesigns creates a finished blanket measuring approximately 28 inches by 36 inches (70 by 90 centimeters), making it an ideal size for infant use or as a decorative throw.
This blanket showcases a reversible basketweave pattern created through a straightforward combination of knit and purl stitches. The dual-sided appeal of the pattern makes it visually interesting from both the front and back, eliminating the need to hide an unfinished reverse side. The pattern is specifically designed for beginner knitters who are ready to progress beyond basic stockinette stitch and explore simple lace construction techniques.
The pattern incorporates several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for developing skills:
The pattern requires approximately 10.5 ounces (300 grams) or 625 yards (570 meters) of yarn in a medium weight or worsted weight (#4) classification. This yarn weight range provides good stitch definition for the basketweave pattern while remaining soft and suitable for a baby blanket. Knitters should purchase slightly extra yardage and verify that all yarn balls match in dye lot to ensure consistent color throughout the finished project.
The recommended needles are 5.5mm (UK size 5, US size 9), available as either a pair of straight needles or a 29-inch (80-centimeter) circular needle. The pattern specifies a gauge of 16 stitches and 20 rows per 4 inches by 4 inches (10 centimeters by 10 centimeters) when worked in the basketweave pattern on the specified needle size. Achieving correct gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished dimensions.
Beyond yarn and needles, the pattern requires a sewing needle for finishing techniques such as weaving in yarn ends or securing any necessary seams.
Designated as a beginner difficulty pattern, the Basketweave Baby Blanket serves as an excellent stepping stone for knitters progressing from basic techniques to simple lace stitches. The repetitive nature of the basketweave pattern combined with straightforward abbreviations and techniques makes this an encouraging project for developing confidence in lace knitting.
