This is a knitted hot water bottle cover designed by The Dropped Stitch. The cover features functional pockets and is constructed using traditional cable knitting techniques. The garment is worked in pieces and assembled, with button closures for practical everyday use.
The pattern employs several intermediate knitting techniques to create visual interest and structure. Cable knitting is a primary technique, utilizing a cable needle to cross stitches and create the signature twisted rope-like texture that characterizes Aran knitting. The pattern uses the C4B (cable 4 back) technique, where stitches are slipped onto a cable needle, held at the back of the work, then knitted in a specific sequence to form cables.
Additional shaping techniques include yarn forward increases (yfwd) for creating buttonholes, knit two together decreases (K2tog) for shaping, and casting off to finish edges and create shoulder and neck shaping. The pattern also incorporates stitch holders to manage stitches during construction, allowing sections to be worked separately and assembled later.
This pattern requires 2 x 100g balls of Aran weight yarn. The recommended yarn composition is 75% Acrylic and 25% Wool, providing a blend of durability and warmth. Each 100g ball yields approximately 200 meters (220 yards), making the total yardage approximately 400 meters for the complete project.
4.5mm (UK size 7) knitting needles are required to achieve the correct gauge. The pattern specifies a tension of 26 stitches and 18 rows per 4 inches (10 centimeters) measured over stocking stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions.
Additional notions include a cable needle for working cable stitches, 3 stitch holders for managing stitches during construction, and 5 buttons for closures. The cover is designed as an intermediate-level project, suitable for knitters with experience in basic techniques who are ready to work with cables and shaping.
