Amigurumi Panda Bear Pattern: Millie by Patchwork Moose
What is Being Made
Millie is a crocheted amigurumi panda bear toy designed by Kate E Hancock. This finished stuffed animal measures approximately 6 inches (15 centimeters) when sitting, making it an ideal size for a small decorative toy or gift. The design features the classic panda coloring with contrasting main and accent colors to create the distinctive black and white markings characteristic of pandas.
Craft and Project Type
This is a crochet amigurumi project, which is a Japanese craft technique for creating small, stuffed crocheted toys. Amigurumi requires tight, consistent stitching to prevent toy filling from showing through the fabric. The pattern is written using US crochet terminology and is classified as an intermediate difficulty level, making it suitable for crocheters with some experience beyond basic stitches.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern overview provided, amigurumi construction typically employs fundamental crochet stitches worked in continuous rounds. The pattern requires working with two colors (Yarn A for the main color and Yarn B for contrast) to achieve the panda's distinctive markings. Crocheters will need to be comfortable with color changes, increasing and decreasing stitches to shape the bear's body parts, and closing seams as they assemble the finished toy.
The pattern offers flexibility in eye construction: crocheters can either use safety eyes for a finished look or crochet eyes using small amounts of black and colored yarn. For toys intended for small children, the crochet eyes option is recommended for safety reasons. Additional embroidery work is included for creating the panda's nose using yarn or thread.
Materials and Tools Required
- Yarn: DK weight yarn in two colors—50g ball of Main Colour (Yarn A) and 50g ball of Contrast Colour (Yarn B). Small amounts of black and colored yarn are needed if choosing the crochet eyes option.
- Crochet Hooks: 3.5mm (E) crochet hook for the main construction, and 3.25mm (D) crochet hook for the crochet eyes option
- Notions: Toy filling for stuffing, 2 x 20mm safety eyes (if not using crochet eyes), yarn or thread for embroidering the nose, yarn needle for assembly and finishing, and a stitch marker to track rounds
Pattern Notes and Customization
The pattern is designed for DK weight yarn with appropriate hook sizes specified. However, crocheters have the option to use different yarn weights and adjust accordingly. Important: When substituting yarn weights, use a slightly smaller hook than the yarn manufacturer recommends to maintain the tight tension necessary for amigurumi construction and prevent stuffing visibility. The finished size will vary based on yarn weight and hook size choices, so crocheters should test gauge if deviating from the specified materials.
