Amelie Chunky Lace Beanie & Scarf by Jennie Atkinson
Project Overview
The Amelie is a coordinated knitted hat and scarf set designed by independent designer Jennie Atkinson. This project combines a simple lace stitch pattern with chunky yarn to create a quick-to-knit yet stylish accessory pairing. The set is finished with optional pom-poms for added visual interest and texture.
What Is Being Made
- Amelie Chunky Lace Beanie: A fitted hat designed to fit head circumferences of 51–56cm (20–22 inches) or 58–61cm (23–24 inches). The finished hat circumference measures 46cm (18 inches) or 51cm (20 inches) depending on size, with a length of 18cm (7 inches) or 19cm (7½ inches).
- Amelie Chunky Lace Scarf: A rectangular scarf measuring 203cm (80 inches) in length and 16.5cm (6½ inches) in width, providing substantial coverage and warmth.
Knitting Techniques
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental techniques. The scarf is shaped using increases worked throughout the pattern, which integrate seamlessly with the lace stitch repeat. The beanie is constructed using double-pointed needles for the crown shaping, requiring knitters to work in the round. The lace pattern features an 8-row repeat structure, though the pattern notes indicate that a simplified 4-row repeat can be used throughout due to the shaping increases in the scarf.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st st): Used as the base fabric reference for tension calculations.
- Lace Pattern: A decorative openwork stitch that forms the primary visual element of both the hat and scarf. The lace pattern is worked over 8 rows in the original design but can be simplified to a 4-row repeat throughout the project.
Materials
Yarn: Cascade Yarns Eco+ in Chunky weight (100% Peruvian Highland Wool; 437 meters/478 yards per 250-gram ball) in shade 9451 Lake Chelan Heather. One 250-gram ball provides sufficient yardage for the complete set, with approximately 150 grams used for the scarf, 35–45 grams for the hat depending on size, and 50 grams for optional pom-poms.
Needles & Accessories: 6.5mm (UK size 3/US size 10.5) straight or circular needles for the main fabric, plus four 6.5mm double-pointed needles for working the hat crown in the round. Additional accessories include a stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats and an optional pom-pom maker for finishing.
Tension & Gauge
Stockinette stitch tension is 14–16 stitches to 10 centimeters using 5.5–6mm (UK sizes 5–4/US sizes 9–10) needles. Lace pattern tension is 13 stitches and 24 rows to 10 centimeters using 6.5mm needles. Achieving correct tension is essential for proper fit, particularly for the hat circumference and scarf width.
