Abayomi the Agama Lizard Crochet Pattern

What is Being Made

Abayomi the Agama Lizard is a crocheted amigurumi toy designed by Victoria Kairis of Smiley Crochet Things. This finished toy measures approximately 16cm (6¼ inches) in length and 6cm (2½ inches) in width, making it a small, portable stuffed animal perfect for collectors or as a handmade gift.

Craft and Technique

This pattern uses the amigurumi method, a Japanese crochet technique for creating three-dimensional stuffed toys and animals. The amigurumi approach involves working in continuous spirals rather than joining rounds, which creates a seamless, organic appearance. The pattern notes that there is a distinct right side and wrong side; when working in a clockwise direction, the right side will be positioned on the outside of the finished toy, with front loops visible on the exterior.

Stitches and Construction Details

The pattern uses standard crochet stitches appropriate for beginners. Key construction notes include:

  • Work is done in continuous spirals unless otherwise stated in specific sections
  • Starting chains do not count as the first stitch unless explicitly noted in the pattern instructions
  • When joining new yarn colors, begin working in the same stitch unless the pattern specifies otherwise
  • The technique creates a seamless toy with a polished, professional appearance

Materials and Yarn

This beginner-friendly pattern calls for DK weight yarn (also known as 8ply), using 100% acrylic in small amounts of multiple colors. The color palette includes orange and turquoise, which are used to create the distinctive appearance of an agama lizard. DK weight yarn is a versatile mid-weight option that works well for amigurumi projects, providing good stitch definition while remaining manageable for newer crocheters.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner level, making it accessible to crocheters who are new to the craft or new to amigurumi construction. The straightforward techniques and clear instructions make Abayomi the Agama Lizard an excellent introductory project for learning continuous spiral amigurumi methods.
