Product Description
Got Needles? You could use any yarns for this super quick project.
I used Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino (dreamy) and Colinette Giotto Ribbon.
Used 10 1/2, 13, 15, 17, and 19 needles.
From concept to wedding, less than 24 hours, hence the name. I bought the yarn, swatched, drank beer, swatched some more, slept, ate, knitted, and got to the church on time, tattoo and arm flab covered in colors perfect for my halter dress!
24-Hour Shrug by Andrea Marquis
What Is Being Made
The 24-Hour Shrug is a knitted bolero-style shrug designed for quick completion. This intermediate-level project creates a lightweight shoulder covering that drapes across the back and upper arms, perfect for layering over dresses or tops. The shrug is worked in a single piece from the ribbed cuff upward, with strategic increases and needle size changes that shape the garment as you knit.
Construction and Techniques
This shrug employs a straightforward construction method that combines several key knitting techniques to achieve its finished shape efficiently. The project begins with a ribbed cuff worked on smaller needles, then transitions into stockinette stitch as the body expands. A distinctive feature of the 24-Hour Shrug is the progressive needle size increase throughout the knitting process, which creates shaping without requiring complex decreases or intricate stitch manipulations.
The pattern uses a two-yarn holding technique in the middle sections, where two different yarns are held together and knitted as one strand. This creates visual interest and color variation without requiring color-work techniques like stranding or intarsia. The designer notes that gauge is not critical for this project, making it forgiving for knitters still developing tension consistency.
Stitches Used
- Ribbing (K2, P2): Creates the fitted cuff at the beginning, worked for 28 rows to establish elasticity and structure
- Stockinette Stitch: Comprises the main body of the shrug, alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side for a smooth, classic finish
- Edge Stitches: Knit stitches are maintained on the purl-side rows at the beginning to control rolling and maintain neat edges
- Increases: Single stitch increases worked at each end of the garment to gradually expand the width across the shoulders and back
Materials and Tools
The 24-Hour Shrug requires five different needle sizes to achieve its graduated shaping: US #10½, #13, #15, #17, and #19. This progressive needle increase is central to the design, allowing the fabric to expand and drape naturally without traditional decreasing methods.
The pattern is worked with two yarns in the original sample. Yarn 1 is Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino in dark brown, which provides a soft, luxurious base. Yarn 2 is Colinette Giotto in variegated greens (colorway 222444), which adds visual complexity when held together with the first yarn. However, the designer explicitly notes that any type or number of yarns would work for this project, offering flexibility for yarn substitution based on personal preference, stash availability, or desired finished appearance. The pattern accommodates various yarn weights and fiber contents, making it adaptable to different yarn collections.
Pattern Flow and Finishing
The shrug is sized to fit based on individual body measurements, specifically the distance from elbow to elbow across the back with arms outstretched. This measurement-based approach ensures a custom fit regardless of the knitter's gauge or yarn choice. The pattern progresses through distinct sections marked by needle size changes at specific row intervals, creating a logical workflow that builds the garment systematically from cuff to finished width.
