15 free Christmas crochet patterns to make this year

Every pattern below is a free PDF download: 15 festive crochet patterns for ornaments, wreaths, toys, stocking fillers and one big advent blanket. Some are quick enough to finish in an evening and some deserve a head start, so we've marked which is which, along with the yarn weight and, where the designer says, whether the pattern uses UK or US crochet terms. How to pick the right pattern
Tonight: the mini Santa hat, candy cane reindeer, mini stocking and pencil topper are all small and use scraps.
This weekend: the gnomes, the gingerbread wreath, the Festive Friends toys and the placemats.
Start now: the advent blanket is ten granny squares (one doubles as a pocket), so it needs weeks, not days, if you want it on the sofa by 1 December.
A note on terms: a UK double crochet is a US single crochet. Several of these designers write in US terms, so check before you start. We've flagged each one below where the pattern says which it uses.
1. Mini Santa hat ornament
Tiny hats about 7cm tall to hang on the tree or pop on a toy. The pattern comes with photos and links to video tutorials, so it's a good first amigurumi. Sport weight yarn, 3mm hook, US terms, and you can scale it up or down with thicker or thinner yarn.
2. Gingerbread Christmas wreath
Holly, candy canes and little gingerbread jumpers on a wreath for the front door. Paintbox Yarns designed it in Cotton DK, and cotton keeps motifs crisp enough to survive being boxed up every January. Any DK yarn will work.
3. Festive gnomes

5. Christmas pudding amigurumi
A little amigurumi Christmas pudding. It's aran weight and one of the quickest projects on this list, so it makes a good last-minute gift for someone who loves pudding more than presents.
6. Candy cane reindeer
Little reindeer that slip over a candy cane and hang on the tree, and you can refill them every year. The designer makes all six from a standard pack of 12 canes in one evening. Aran weight.
7. Mini fluffy Christmas stocking
A small DK stocking that fits a nail varnish, a tube of hand cream or a fun-size chocolate bar. Make one as a colleague gift, or string a row together as an advent garland.
8. Gingerbread man chocolate orange cover
A gingerbread man jacket for a chocolate orange, sized for the current, smaller oranges. It's worked mostly in rounds in DK cotton. If you swap to a wool mix, check the fit as you go.
9. Happy little Christmas trees
A small flat tree for garlands, gift tags or the tree itself. It uses 4 ply yarn, a 3mm hook and UK terms, and it's a good way to use up leftover 4 ply yarn.
10. Sun Star snowflake
Snowflake No. 4 from Renata Saj's Christmas Mobile Project. It's worked in thread or lace weight, so it's the most delicate make here. Starch it flat and it'll keep its points for years.
11. 'Tis the Season Christmas trees
One pattern with two tree sizes and several ways to decorate them, from bold stripes to bobble-stitch baubles. Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK. Make one of each size for the mantel.
12. Snowflake placemats
Snowflake placemats for the Christmas table. They're beginner-friendly, written in US terms and work in aran or DK. The printable PDF covers materials, gauge and assembly.
13. Giant Christmas bauble
A bauble big enough to be the centrepiece of the tree. It's super chunky, so it grows fast. US terms, beginner-friendly.
14. Christmas tree pencil topper
A tiny tree that sits on the end of a pencil, which makes a stocking filler children will actually use. It's 4 ply. The designer also has a Santa hat and a Rudolph in the same free collection.
15. Christmas advent blanket
The big one: nine Christmas-themed granny squares and a large Santa square. The stocking square doubles as a pocket for Christmas Eve treats. It was first released as a crochet-along, and some squares have YouTube video tutorials. DK weight. Start now. Stock up on crochet hooks if you're missing a size.
