Product Description
When I started making this project I was in doubt because I actually needed both a bag and a backpack to bring with me during vacations. Both had to be comfortable, but not too big. From here the idea to develop a ’TRANSFORMER’ bag. The shoulder strap is extensible and the flap is optional. It still have a simple spiral construction for both bottom and body. I hope you'll like this pattern as I did.

ZAIBO Bag and Backpack Crochet Pattern
Project Overview
The ZAIBO is a versatile crochet design created by independent designer Arianna Amodeo that functions as both a bag and backpack. This intermediate-level crochet project offers crafters the flexibility to create a practical accessory suitable for everyday use, with construction techniques that allow for multiple carrying options.
What Is Being Made
The ZAIBO pattern provides instructions for constructing a dual-purpose bag and backpack. The design includes multiple functional components: an oval-shaped bottom base, a structured body section, a flap closure, cord details, and adjustable straps. The pattern's versatility allows makers to create either a traditional shoulder bag or convert it into a backpack configuration depending on strap attachment preferences.
Construction Techniques
This crochet project employs fundamental and intermediate shaping techniques essential for creating structured bags. The pattern utilizes an oval bottom construction method, which provides a stable foundation for the bag body. The structured approach to building the body section demonstrates proper stitch increases and decreases for creating three-dimensional form. Cord work is incorporated as both a functional and decorative element, while the flap construction adds closure functionality to the design.
Crochet Stitches and Methods
- Oval bottom shaping using foundational crochet techniques
- Body construction with stitch patterns suitable for worsted weight yarn
- Cord creation for straps and decorative elements
- Flap shaping and finishing
- Abbreviations provided in pattern documentation for stitch references
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The ZAIBO pattern is designed for worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn category that provides excellent structure and durability for bag construction. Worsted weight yarn works efficiently with appropriately sized crochet hooks, creating a fabric with good stitch definition and strength suitable for a functional accessory that will hold items. The pattern format is provided as a downloadable PDF, allowing crafters to reference instructions while working through each construction stage.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate difficulty project, the ZAIBO pattern assumes crocheters have foundational skills including basic stitches and ability to follow stitch counts and shaping instructions. The intermediate classification reflects the project's multiple components and the shaping techniques required to create the structured bag form.
Pattern Contents and Organization
The pattern is comprehensively organized with dedicated sections for each construction phase. Pattern materials include project details, stitch abbreviations for easy reference, detailed instructions for the oval bottom foundation, body construction guidelines, cord and strap assembly, flap creation, and multiple annexes providing additional technical information and support materials.
