Product Description

You're My Butterfly Hat is perfect for kids who love butterflies & hearts.

Size**:** To fit a toddlers head of 51 - 53cm/20 - 21 inches circumference.

Yarn: 2 colours of 8 ply/DK/light, 50gm balls of merino wool. I often use Debbie Bliss Rialto DK, Broadway Merino DK or Bellisimo DK super fine merino wool. Length of yarn is usually between 103 - 125 metres/112 - 137 yards per ball. I have knitted this hat using yarn of 22 sts & 28 rows = 10cm/4 inches gauge. The hat turns out a tiny bit smaller than measurements.

Suggested Needles: 3.25mm/US 3 DPNs, OR 3.25mm/US 3 circular needle for casting on & knitting rib. 4mm/US 6 circular needle for hat body. 4mm/US 6 DPNs for shaping the crown.

Techniques: Knitting in the round, knit & purl stitches, decreasing, catching floats, weaving. The pattern is designed to be jogless.

Notions: Stitch marker, tapestry needle.

What is Being Made

You're My Butterfly Hat is a charming children's hat designed for kids who love butterflies and hearts. This downloadable knitting pattern from independent designer LizzyLou creates a playful, themed accessory perfect for young wearers who want to express their love of nature-inspired designs.

Craft and Difficulty Level

This is an intermediate-level knitting project. The pattern requires solid foundational knitting skills and familiarity with colorwork techniques, making it suitable for knitters who have completed several basic projects and are ready to expand their technical abilities.

Knitting Techniques Used

You're My Butterfly Hat incorporates several important colorwork and construction techniques:

  • Stranding: The primary colorwork method used throughout the hat. This technique involves carrying the unused color loosely across the wrong side of the knitting to create floats. Stranding works most effectively when spanning 4 to 5 stitches.
  • Weaving In: For longer floats that exceed the ideal stranding distance, the weaving in technique is employed. This method catches the float on the wrong side using the working yarn, preventing long loose strands that could snag or create loose areas.
  • Color Changes: When transitioning between colors, the yarn must be twisted with the previous color to prevent holes from appearing in the finished fabric.
  • Ribbed Construction: The pattern includes ribbed sections, typically used for the hat's cuff or edging to create stretch and a neat finish.

Stitches Used

While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, the hat employs stranded colorwork stitches combined with ribbing stitches to create the butterfly and heart motifs against a contrasting background. The colorwork sections require working with two colors simultaneously while maintaining consistent tension.

Yarn and Materials

Yarn Weight: DK weight (8 ply) merino wool is recommended for this project. LizzyLou suggests using 50-gram balls with a yardage of approximately 103 to 125 metres (112 to 137 yards) per ball.

Recommended Yarn Brands: The designer favors super fine merino wool options including Debbie Bliss Rialto DK, Broadway Merino DK, or Bellisimo DK.

Yarn Quantity: The pattern requires 1 ball in a pink and white colorway to create the butterfly and heart design elements.

Needles and Tools: The project uses 3.25mm/US 3 double-pointed needles (DPNs) or a 3.25mm/US 3 circular needle for casting on and knitting the ribbed sections. A 4mm/US 6 circular needle is also required for the main body of the hat, allowing for the proper gauge and fabric drape needed for the colorwork sections.

Pattern Format

You're My Butterfly Hat is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, making it convenient for digital access and printing. The pattern is designed by LizzyLou, an independent knitwear designer, and includes detailed yarn recommendations and technique guidance to support knitters through the colorwork process.
