Product Description
The X-capade Shawl is the latest design in the X-capade Collection.
Hawthorne Fingering in Cosmic Speckle was meant to pair with 4 colors of Swish DK for this design. I chose shades from the blue and green families to highlight the teal in the Cosmic Speckle. There are so many amazing color combinations you can make with this oversized shawl.
The combination of lacy strips with solid strips make for amazing drape and the right amount of warmth for layering in the fall and spring, or when the air conditioning is on high.
You'll love being able to wrap yourself in this shawl.
Xcapade Shawl by Creations By Courtney
What is Being Made
The Xcapade Shawl is a crocheted triangular shawl with an impressive wingspan of 86 inches (220 cm) and a center length of 34.5 inches (88 cm). This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Creations By Courtney creates a versatile accessory suitable for layering and draping. The shawl features a sophisticated colorwork design incorporating multiple yarn colors to create visual depth and interest.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level crochet project employs several fundamental and decorative techniques. The pattern utilizes double crochet (dc) stitches as a primary structural element, with the pattern key indicating the use of chainless single crochet (CSDC) for a refined edge treatment. The pattern incorporates chain stitches (ch) for foundation and shaping purposes. The X-shaped stitch repeats that give this shawl its name create visual texture and dimension throughout the piece. Colorwork is achieved through strategic color changes across the pattern rows, requiring attention to yarn management and stitch consistency.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Xcapade Shawl pattern calls for a combination of premium superwash wool yarns in carefully coordinated colors. The main color features WeCrochet Hawthorne Fingering weight yarn (80% Fine Superwash Highland Wool, 20% Polyamide) in the Cosmic Speckle colorway, requiring 2 skeins totaling 558 yards and 156 grams. The secondary colors use Swish DK Weight yarn (100% Fine Superwash Merino Wool), with four distinct colorways:
- Color A (Marina): 2 skeins, 185 yards / 75 grams total
- Color B (Marine Heather): 2 skeins, 146 yards / 59 grams total
- Color C (Twilight): 2 skeins, 172 yards / 69 grams total
- Color D (Delft Heather): 3 skeins, 257 yards / 104 grams total
Tools and Equipment
Construction of the Xcapade Shawl requires a US 7 / 4.50 mm crochet hook, appropriately sized for the yarn weights used. Additional tools include scissors for yarn cutting, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, a stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats, and a measuring tape for checking gauge and finished dimensions.
Gauge Information
Achieving proper gauge is essential for this intermediate project. The pattern specifies approximately 3.5 X-stitch repeats measuring 4 inches (10 cm) horizontally, with 4 rows equaling 2.75 inches (7 cm) vertically. For double crochet sections, the gauge is 17 dc stitches measuring 4 inches (10 cm), with approximately 8 rows of double crochet also measuring 4 inches (10 cm). Checking gauge before beginning ensures the finished shawl achieves the intended wingspan and length measurements.
Skill Level
This pattern is designed for intermediate crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable working with color changes and following detailed stitch patterns. The combination of chainless single crochet, double crochet, and colorwork techniques requires solid foundational skills and the ability to maintain consistent tension throughout the project.
