Product Description

At the turn of Summer's Solstice, Cicadas send their buzzing hum across the waving meadowgrass. Sweet clover, hawkweed, and yarrow bloom above the grass edge to signal that the wild strawberries have ripened. Somewhere in the canopy, a lone mourning dove coos and coaxes the sun's rays to rest as the light changes from bright yellow to pale gold. Notes of meadowsweet and wildflower draft on the winds and bumblebees hum drowsily during the hot afternoon. Stalks of fresh hay are paired with the clover and yarrow- for tea, or for a vase-either will work. Each branch on the pine trees overhead fork like hiking trails, like a tangible form of decisions and moments interworking themselves onto a map. Steps right, instead of left, in the moment masquerading as mistakes divulging the truth: that they were all part of a grander network of lines and angles, beautiful in their complexity and lending to growth.

Wyeth Pullover by Alicia Plummer

What is Being Made

The Wyeth Pullover is a classic knitted sweater designed by Alicia Plummer as a beginner-friendly pullover project. This garment is available in nine sizes, ranging from 36" to 67.5" finished bust circumference, accommodating a wide range of body sizes. The pullover is designed to be worn with 4–6" of positive ease, making it a comfortable, relaxed-fitting everyday sweater. The sample shown measures 40" in finished bust circumference and was knitted with 6" of positive ease for a generous fit.

Techniques Used

The Wyeth Pullover employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginner-level knitters. The construction uses circular knitting, which allows for seamless in-the-round construction on circular needles. Knitters have the option to use magic loop technique or coordinating double-pointed needles (DPNs) if preferred. The pattern incorporates stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and shaping. A cable needle is required, indicating the presence of cable work elements within the design. The sweater is worked using stockinette stitch as the primary fabric base, which creates a smooth, classic appearance.

Stitches Used

Stockinette stitch forms the foundation of the Wyeth Pullover's fabric, worked in the round to create a seamless construction. The pattern calls for a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rounds in stockinette stitch over a 4" (10 cm) swatch when worked on the larger needles. Cable work is incorporated into the design, as indicated by the cable needle requirement, though specific cable stitch patterns are detailed within the full PDF instructions.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Wyeth Pullover is designed to be knitted in worsted-weight yarn. The pattern sample uses Brooklyn Tweed Shelter, a premium yarn composed of 100% American Targhee-Columbia wool. Each 50-gram skein yields 140 yards (120 meters) of yarn. Yardage requirements vary by size: the smallest size (36") requires 900 yards (800 meters), while the largest size (67.5") requires 1,675 yards (1,525 meters).

The pattern specifies two circular needles: US 7 (4.5 mm) for the main fabric and US 5 (3.75 mm) for ribbed sections. Knitters should adjust needle sizes as needed to achieve the correct gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches. Additional notions include 2 stitch markers, a cable needle, a darning needle for finishing, and stitch holders or spare yarn for securing stitches during construction.

Difficulty Level

The Wyeth Pullover is classified as a beginner-level knitting project, making it an excellent choice for knitters developing their fundamental skills. The use of straightforward stockinette stitch combined with basic shaping techniques creates an accessible introduction to sweater construction, while the cable elements provide gentle complexity appropriate for advancing beginners.
