Product Description
Wonderwool Express was designed as a CAL (crochet along) for a coach trip to Wonderwool Wales 2013. The main pattern is something you can easily get into the rhythm of, so you can crochet without thinking too hard. Once you are set up there is only one repeated pattern row – perfect for a coach trip. The main pattern makes a simple lacy scarf, but you can add edging and beads to turn it into something more elegant. Some ideas are included to help inspire you. It was designed for double knit or 4 ply / fingering weight yarn, but can be adapted to any weight. It is reversible, perfect for a scarf. Once complete the scarf has a lovely simple finish and you do not need any fringe or edging at the ends. If you prefer you can add picots, beads, shell or fringe – just use your imagination to create your own unique scarf. Size is 12.5 cm wide by 180 cm long (including fringe) for double knit or 14 cm by 210 cm for 4 ply. Written in English and US crochet terms, also charted.
Wonderwool Express Scarf by Agrarian Artisan
Project Overview
Wonderwool Express is an intermediate-level crochet scarf designed by Agrarian Artisan as a CAL (Crochet Along) project. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a relaxing, rhythmic scarf that allows crocheters to work without intensive concentration once the foundation is established, making it ideal for portable crafting or social crochet sessions.
What Is Being Made
A finished scarf created through crochet techniques, available in two yarn weight options to suit different preferences and stash materials.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches Used
The Wonderwool Express pattern employs fundamental crochet stitches and techniques suitable for intermediate crafters:
- Chain stitch (ch) – used to create the foundation chain that begins the project
- Double crochet (dc) – a core stitch used throughout the pattern structure
- Treble stitch (tr) – employed to add texture and variation to the design
- Stitch spaces (sp) – gaps created between stitches to form the overall pattern repeat
The pattern is structured around a repeating motif that becomes intuitive after the initial setup rows, allowing crocheters to establish a comfortable rhythm and work from memory once familiar with the repeat sequence.
Materials Required
Double Knit (DK) Weight Version
This version uses approximately 300 meters of double knit yarn. The designer used Rowan Damask, a blend of 57% rayon, 22% linen, and 2% acrylic, with each 50-gram ball providing 105 meters (requiring 3 balls total). A 3.75mm or 4mm crochet hook (US sizes F/5 or G/6) is recommended for this yarn weight, along with a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
4 Ply / Fingering Weight Version
For those preferring a lighter yarn, this version requires approximately 400 meters of 4 ply or fingering weight yarn. The designer used Countess Ablaze Lord of Silk in the Poseidon colorway. This version calls for a smaller 3.25mm or 3.0mm crochet hook (US sizes D/3) and produces a more delicate finished scarf. The 4 ply version includes one additional pattern repeat per row compared to the DK version, beginning with a 39-chain foundation rather than 30 chains.
Gauge and Tension
Tension is noted as non-critical for this design, making it forgiving for crocheters of varying experience levels and allowing flexibility in hook and yarn substitutions.
Pattern Format
This is a downloadable PDF pattern that includes complete written instructions, abbreviations using English crochet terminology, and all necessary guidance to complete the scarf from foundation chain through finishing.
