Winter Light Socks by Laura Fahlin Designs
Project Overview
Winter Light socks are an intermediate-level knitting project designed by Laura Fahlin Designs. These socks capture the essence of early morning light glowing through fog and mist, featuring a sophisticated cable pattern that adds visual interest and texture to a classic sock silhouette. The project is available as a downloadable PDF pattern and is suitable for knitters with some experience who are ready to tackle cable techniques in the round.
What Is Being Made
Winter Light is a pair of knitted socks available in four sizes: Small, Medium, Large, and X-Large. The socks feature a fitted leg and foot construction, with unstretched circumferences measuring approximately 7 inches (18 cm) for Small, 8 inches (20 cm) for Medium, 9 inches (23 cm) for Large, and 10 inches (25 cm) for X-Large. These dimensions accommodate a range of foot sizes and can be customized through gauge adjustment.
Techniques Used
The Winter Light pattern employs several key knitting techniques essential to the design. The socks are worked in the round, a fundamental method for creating seamless, tubular garments. Cable techniques feature prominently in the pattern, requiring knitters to use a cable needle to cross stitches over one another, creating the twisted, rope-like texture characteristic of cable knit designs. The pattern also incorporates decreases for shaping, including knit two together (k2tog) and slip, slip, knit (ssk) decreases, which are essential for achieving proper fit at the heel and toe.
Stitches Used
The Winter Light pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with cable work. The base fabric is worked primarily in stockinette stitch in the round, which creates a smooth, V-textured surface that serves as a backdrop for the cable details. Cable stitches are a central feature, specifically:
- 1/1 LC (Left Cable): Slip 1 stitch purlwise to cable needle, hold in front, knit 1 stitch from the left needle, then knit 1 stitch from the cable needle
- 1/1 RC (Right Cable): Slip 1 stitch purlwise to cable needle, hold in back, knit 1 stitch from the left needle, then knit 1 stitch from the cable needle
Additional stitches include knit (k), purl (p), slip stitches (sl1 and sl2 with yarn in back), and decreases such as knit two together (k2tog), purl two together (p2tog), and slip, slip, knit (ssk). Stitch markers are used throughout to denote the beginning of round and pattern repeats.
Materials and Gauge
Winter Light socks are designed to be knitted with 4-ply weight yarn, specifically Vidalana Ambient Sock yarn in the colorway Robin's Promise. This yarn blend consists of 80% Peruvian Highland Wool and 20% Nylon, providing durability and elasticity ideal for sock construction. A total of 400 yards (365 meters) per 100 grams is required, with 1 skein used for Small, Medium, and Large sizes, and 2 skeins for X-Large.
The pattern is worked on US 1 (2.25 mm) needles, sized to achieve the specified gauge of 32 stitches and 48 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch worked in the round. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct sock circumference and fit. Additional notions include a cable needle for executing cable techniques, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and round beginnings, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends upon completion.
Skill Level and Pattern Difficulty
Rated as an intermediate skill level at 80%, Winter Light is appropriate for knitters who have mastered basic sock construction and are comfortable working in the round. The cable techniques require familiarity with cable needles and the ability to read and follow cable charts or written instructions. Knitters should be confident in their ability to maintain consistent tension and manage multiple pattern elements simultaneously.
