Product Description
When I saw this yarn, Kidsilk Haze in lovely deep colours, I thought ‘winter’. But would the yarn be warm enough for winter? The answer is ‘yes’! It is light and soft but very warm when wrapped around your neck and shoulders. Perfect for winter. The dark, jewel like colours add a greater depth, and somehow make it feel warmer. The shawl is worked from the bottom point upwards. The finished size is 180cm (72 in) wide by 90cm (36 in) deep. Whilst designed originally for kidsilk laceweight yarn, it can also be made in 4 ply using a hook size of around 5.50mm
Please note that I do crochet quite loosely in mohair, so it is important to check your gauge/tension and change the hook size to suit.
A huge thank you to laralorelei for testing this pattern and making 2 lovely 4 ply shawls.

Winter Jewels Shawl by Agrarian Artisan
What is Being Made
The Winter Jewels Shawl is a crocheted triangular wrap designed to be worn around the neck and shoulders. This intermediate-level crochet project is worked from the bottom point upward and reaches a finished size of 180 centimeters (72 inches), making it a generous, versatile accessory suitable for layering during cold weather months.
Craft and Construction Method
This shawl is created using the crochet technique, specifically built on a foundation chain that is joined into a ring to establish the starting point. The pattern employs an expanding construction method, working upward from a central base to create the triangular shawl shape. The designer notes that this construction approach allows the piece to grow organically while maintaining structural integrity through the stitch patterns used.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The Winter Jewels Shawl incorporates several fundamental crochet stitches to build its decorative and functional structure:
- Chain stitch (ch): Used to create the foundation chain and spacing elements throughout the pattern
- Double crochet (dc): Provides structure and definition at key points within the design
- Treble crochet (tr): Creates the shell motifs that form the primary visual and textural elements of the shawl
- Slip stitch (ss): Used to join the foundation chain into a ring to begin the project
- Shell stitch: Multiple treble stitches worked into single stitches create decorative shell formations that repeat throughout the pattern
- Chain space loops: Openwork sections created by chains and missed stitches add lightness and visual interest to the finished piece
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Winter Jewels Shawl is designed to be worked in Kidsilk Haze yarn, a luxury fiber known for its delicate, soft qualities. The pattern utilizes varied yarn weight, allowing for creative color work and texture variation. The designer specifically selected deep, jewel-toned colorways in this yarn, noting that the rich, dark hues add visual depth and create a perception of additional warmth despite the yarn's lightweight nature.
The Kidsilk Haze fiber is described as light and soft while providing genuine warmth when wrapped around the neck and shoulders—a key consideration for winter wear. The yarn's inherent qualities make it ideal for creating an accessory that is both breathable and insulating, perfect for layering during transitional and cold seasons.
Design Characteristics
The shawl features repeating shell motifs that build progressively as the pattern expands from the center point. The combination of solid stitches (double crochet) and decorative shells (treble clusters) creates visual rhythm, while chain space loops introduce openwork sections that enhance drape and movement. The jewel-tone color palette in Kidsilk Haze adds sophistication and seasonal appeal to the finished accessory.
Skill Level
Rated as an intermediate crochet project, the Winter Jewels Shawl requires familiarity with basic crochet stitches and the ability to follow pattern repeats and increases. Crocheters should be comfortable reading written instructions and managing stitch counts as the shawl expands.
