Wikingermütze in Schachenmayr Universa – S6914: A Detailed Pattern Summary
This free downloadable PDF knitting pattern from Schachenmayr guides knitters through the construction of a charming Viking hat (Wikingermütze) complete with ear flaps, decorative cords, and stuffed knitted horns. The design is worked in Schachenmayr Universa, a DK-weight yarn, and is sized for two head circumferences: approximately 42–46 cm and 48–52 cm. The finished hat height measures approximately 16.5 cm for the smaller size and 18.5 cm for the larger size, making it a compact and playful project suitable for children or adults with smaller head sizes.
Materials Required
The pattern calls for Schachenmayr Universa yarn in three colorways:
- Nuss (Fb 00110) – a warm nutty brown, used as the main body color
- Grau melange (Fb 00197) – a heathered grey
- Wollweiß (Fb 00102) – a creamy wool white, used for the horns
Each colorway is used in 50 g quantities. In addition to yarn, the pattern requires:
- A Prym circular knitting needle, 40 cm long, in size 3–4 mm
- A double-pointed needle set (Nadelspiel) in the same size, used for crown decreases and cord knitting
- Stuffing (Füllwatte) for filling the horns
- 8 buttons – specifically Dill Art. 290539, 18 mm, available from specialty craft retailers
Techniques and Construction Overview
The Wikingermütze is a multi-component knitted hat that combines in-the-round knitting, flat knitting, and a small applied i-cord technique. The construction is broken into several distinct sections: the main hat body, the ear flaps, the decorative cords, and the stuffed horns. Each section uses a different stitch pattern or method, making this an engaging and varied knitting project.
Hat Body
The main body of the hat is worked in the round using stockinette stitch (glatt rechts) in Nuss. After reaching a height of 9 cm (small) or 10 cm (large), crown shaping begins. The decreases are structured as follows:
- Eight decrease points are evenly marked around the hat
- At each marked point, the marked stitch is knitted together with the stitch before it (rechts zusammenstricken)
- These decreases are repeated at the same positions every 4th round, twice, then every 2nd round, 6 times (small) or 7 times (large)
- When the stitch count is sufficiently reduced, knitters switch to the double-pointed needle set
- The final rounds work all remaining stitches as k2tog until only 8 stitches remain, which are then drawn together firmly with the working yarn
Ear Flaps
The ear flaps are picked up and worked flat from the lower edge of the hat. The pattern specifies marking the front center of the hat at 19 cm (small) or 22 cm (large), with an additional 8 cm marked on each side of this center point. From each of these 8 cm sections, 20 stitches are picked up in Nuss and worked in garter stitch (kraus rechts) – a classic, sturdy texture achieved by knitting every row on both right and wrong sides.
Starting from row 12 (small) or row 14 (large), decreases are worked at both ends of every row by knitting the first and last 2 stitches together, continuing until only 4 stitches remain
