Product Description
The Whispering Willows Poncho is a beautiful summer wrap. The stitch combination creates a lovely texture and lay of the poncho allowing a slight breeze to go through but there is still enough close stitches to keep you warm.
The pattern comes in 2 sizes because Ponchos have a forgiving fit and will fit a range of sizes. The pattern has a small/medium size as well as a large/XLarge size. You can easily add additional rows to make the poncho longer to cover more of the arm and/or to add length to the design.
The pattern is written in all US English terms only.

What is Being Made
The Whispering Willows Poncho is a downloadable crochet pattern designed to create a versatile layering piece available in two size ranges: S/M and L/XL. This poncho features a finished width of 12 inches for both sizes, with length options ranging from 42 to 51 inches before final assembly, making it suitable for various body types and style preferences.
Crochet Techniques Used
This intermediate-level crochet project employs fundamental and intermediate techniques to construct the poncho. The pattern utilizes foundational chain stitches to establish the base structure, followed by working in rows to build the fabric. The design incorporates shaping and assembly methods to transform flat crochet pieces into the finished poncho form. Proper gauge measurement is emphasized as essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions.
Stitches Used
- Double Treble Crochet (dtc) – An advanced stitch created by wrapping yarn 3 times around the hook, inserting into a stitch, pulling up a loop, then repeating the yarn over and pull through 2 loops sequence 3 additional times to complete the stitch
- Half Double Crochet (hdc) – A medium-height stitch used throughout the pattern
- Single Crochet (sc) – A foundational short stitch
- Chain (ch) – The basic foundation stitch for establishing starting edges
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Whispering Willows Poncho requires a Crochet Hook size I (5.5 mm) and Finer Worsted Weight Yarn (#4), with a yardage requirement of 500–600 yards depending on the size selected. The sample was created using Knit Picks Comfy Worsted in the Sea Foam colorway. Alternative yarn options suitable for this project include Lion Brand Heartland, Caron Simply Soft, Premier Yarns Cotton Soft Silk, and Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek.
Additional Supplies
Beyond yarn and hook, this pattern requires standard crochet finishing tools: scissors for cutting yarn, a yarn needle for weaving in ends during finishing, and a measuring tape for checking gauge and verifying finished dimensions throughout the project.
Gauge Information
Achieving the correct gauge is critical for obtaining proper poncho sizing. Using Hook I (5.5 mm), the target gauge is 13 half double crochet stitches by 11 rows equaling a 4-inch square. Crocheters should adjust their hook size if their gauge does not match this specification to ensure the finished poncho meets the intended measurements.
