What Is Being Made

Wendiesel is a versatile blanket scarf designed to be worn year-round as a cover-up or wrap. This knitted accessory measures 20" x 62" when blocked and features a colorful striped design using seven different yarn colors. The finished piece functions as both a practical layering garment and a decorative fashion accessory suitable for any season.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This project employs a straightforward lengthwise construction method, meaning the scarf is knit back and forth along its length rather than cast on for the full width. The design uses a garter stitch throughout, which means every row consists of knit stitches only. This repetitive, meditative stitch pattern makes Wendiesel an excellent beginner-friendly project despite its generous finished dimensions.

The pattern recommends slipping the first stitch of every row purl-wise, a technique that creates a neater, more finished edge appearance. Circular needles measuring 4.5 mm (US 7) in either 32" or 40" length are used to accommodate the large number of stitches required, though the needles function as straight needles for this back-and-forth construction. An optional crochet hook in the same 4.5 mm (US 7) size may be used if the crafter chooses to add fringe to the finished edges.

Yarn and Materials

Wendiesel requires 1750 yards total of fingering weight yarn in seven different colors. The main color (MC) uses 459 yards, while six contrasting colors each require 219 yards. The pattern was photographed using Wisdom Yarn 'Stanza' in Burns Blue for the main color and Cascade Yarns Heritage Wave in Nightshade for one of the contrasting colors, along with Knit Picks Imagination (now discontinued) for additional color variation.

Essential tools include 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles in 32" or 40" length, a stitch marker, scissors, measuring tape, and a sewing needle for weaving in yarn ends. The optional crochet hook of the same gauge size is needed only if adding fringe to the finished scarf edges.

Gauge and Project Notes

The pattern specifies a gauge of 34 stitches by 34 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in garter stitch. However, the designer notes that gauge is not critical for this project, making it even more accessible for beginners who may struggle with gauge precision. Optional fringe can be added to enhance the blanket scarf's visual appeal, though the base construction is complete without it. The finished blocked measurements are 20 inches wide by 62 inches long, excluding any optional fringe additions.
