Product Description
The Welsh Dragon Tea Cosy Knitting Pattern was inspired by dragon of Wales.
This lovely tea cosy is all knitted in red, his right paw is raised and he has a long looped forked tail. His wings are stood upright, and he has golden eyes. He really is a handsome dragon.
I designed the dragon to be a Welsh Dragon, but it could be made in other colors to make it look like a fairytale dragon or even an old dragon.
The cosy is made from Stylecraft Special DK and is a fabulous project to make and enjoy. The perfect tea cosy for a tea lovers who love Wales and Dragons.
The Welsh Dragon tea cosy fits a medium sized teapot that covers a teapot that holds 6 to 8 cups or 2 pints.
The pattern will be available for digital download as soon as you have completed purchase, so you could start knitting Him very soon!
This product is the knitting pattern only; to knit your own Welsh Dragon tea cosy.
Welsh Dragon Tea Cosy Knitting Pattern
What is Being Made
The Welsh Dragon Tea Cosy is a knitted tea cosy designed to fit a 2-pint teapot, or a teapot that holds 6 to 8 cups. This is a downloadable knitting pattern created by TeaCosyFolk, an independent designer specializing in tea cosy projects. The finished piece combines a main cosy body with decorative elements inspired by Welsh dragon design.
Techniques and Stitches Used
This intermediate-level knitting pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for crafters with some experience. The construction begins with a cast-on of 28 stitches and features the following stitch work:
- Ribbing: The pattern starts with six rows of 1x1 ribbing (alternating knit and purl stitches), creating an elastic edge that helps the cosy fit securely around the teapot
- Textured Stitch Pattern: Rows 7 and 8 introduce a more complex stitch pattern using combinations of knit (K) and purl (P) stitches in a repeating sequence, worked over multiple rows to create visual interest and texture
- Stocking Stitch: The main body of the cosy is worked in stocking stitch (alternating rows of knit and purl), which creates a smooth, classic fabric suitable for displaying the dragon design
- Stitch Holder Use: The pattern requires leaving stitches on a spare needle at specific points, allowing for later construction of additional design elements
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Welsh Dragon Tea Cosy pattern calls for DK weight yarn (double knitting), which is a lightweight yarn that produces a delicate, refined finished fabric ideal for tea cosies. The specific yarn used is Stylecraft Special DK, with the following color requirements:
- 85g Stylecraft Special DK in Lipstick: The primary color for the main cosy body, divided into two balls to be knitted as double thickness for added structure and warmth
- 1g Stylecraft Special DK in Saffron: A small quantity of this warm golden-yellow shade, used for accent details
- 1g Stylecraft Special DK in Black: A minimal amount for fine details, likely used to define the dragon design elements
Needles and Additional Supplies
The pattern requires two different needle sizes to achieve proper fabric density and texture variation:
- 5.5mm needles (UK size 5 or US size 9): Used for the main cosy construction, including the cast-on, ribbing, and stocking stitch sections
- 4.00mm needles (UK size 8 or US size 6): Likely used for finer detail work or finishing elements
- Stitch Holder: Required for holding stitches during construction breaks
- Stuffing: Included in the materials list, suggesting that dimensional elements such as the dragon design features are padded or stuffed for a three-dimensional effect
Pattern Difficulty and Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with multiple colors, manage stitch holders, and follow more complex stitch sequences. The combination of ribbing, textured stitches, and stocking stitch requires attention to pattern instructions and the ability to maintain consistent tension throughout the project.
