WEBS Emerging Designer Series Summer 2015 eBook: Baby Knitting Patterns by Debbi Stone
This downloadable PDF eBook is part of the WEBS Emerging Designer Series and showcases the creative talent of designer Debbi Stone. Released as the Summer 2015 edition, the collection is dedicated entirely to baby knitting and includes three coordinating designs — the Sproutlet Blanket, the Sproutlet Hat, and the Sproutlet Sweater — all sharing a unified aesthetic that makes them ideal as a complete handmade gift set for a new arrival.
About the Sproutlet Collection
The three pieces in this collection are united by a signature stitch pattern designed by Debbi Stone, described as easy to memorize once established. The designs are rated intermediate in difficulty, making them well-suited for knitters who are comfortable with basic techniques and ready to explore more structured stitch work, shaping, and construction methods. All three projects are worked in Valley Yarns branded yarn, ensuring a cohesive look and feel across the set.
Sproutlet Blanket
The Sproutlet Blanket is designed to be a practical and beautiful baby accessory, sized specifically to function as a car seat or stroller cover. Its finished measurements are 24 inches by 34 inches, making it a generous but manageable knit that works up into a thoughtful and functional baby gift.
Construction and Techniques
The blanket is worked flat on a US size 10 (6.00 mm) 32-inch circular needle, using the circular needle for its length to accommodate the stitch count rather than for knitting in the round. It begins with a cast-on of 94 stitches followed by 8 rows of garter stitch to create a neat, non-curling border. The body of the blanket features Debbi Stone's signature stitch pattern, which combines knit, purl, and slip stitches to create a textured, visually interesting fabric. The stitch pattern involves slipped stitches worked with yarn held in back on right-side rows, which creates a subtle elongated texture across the fabric.
Stitches Used
- Garter stitch — used for the border rows to provide a stable, flat edge
- Stockinette stitch — referenced as the basis for gauge measurement
- Slip stitch pattern — the signature textured stitch combining knit, purl, and slipped stitches with yarn held in back (wyib) and yarn held in front (wyif)
Yarn and Materials
The Sproutlet Blanket calls for 5 skeins of Valley Yarns Valley Superwash Bulky, a chunky weight yarn made from 100% Extra Fine Merino wool. Each skein weighs 100 grams and contains 109 yards. The colorway used in the pattern is color 10 Spring Leaf, a fresh, nature-inspired shade perfectly suited to a baby gift. The superwash treatment makes this yarn practical for baby items, as it can be machine washed — an important consideration for new parents. The gauge for this project is 3.5 stitches and 6 rows per inch in stockinette stitch.
Sproutlet Hat
The Sproutlet Hat is the second design in the collection and is intended to coordinate with the blanket and sweater as part of a complete baby set. As a hat, it is a relatively quick knit that allows crafters to practice the same signature stitch pattern established in the blanket in a smaller, faster format. Baby hats are perennially popular handmade gifts, and this design benefits from the cohesive aesthetic of the Sproutlet collection.
Construction and Techniques
The hat is part of the broader collection's use of worked flat and structured knitting techniques. Like the blanket, it draws on the same easy-to-memorize stitch pattern created by Debbi Stone, giving knitters the opportunity to become fluent in the repeat before moving on to the more complex sweater. The hat uses Valley Yarns yarn
