Product Description
This is the third in my second washcloth series! I have a new one coming out every month. These have been designed to help crocheters expand on their skill set by playing with stitches and stitch designs that may be new to them while creating something that is useful. This series we're playing with borders so that you can discover new ways to add an edge to your own projects.
This design uses double crochet (treble in UK terms) to create a border.
Washcloth 3 Series 2 by Seona Roberts
Project Overview
Washcloth 3 Series 2 is a beginner-friendly crochet dishcloth pattern designed by independent designer Seona Roberts. This project is part of a series focused on exploring different border techniques that can be applied to various crochet projects. The pattern emphasizes adaptability and creative customization, making it an excellent choice for crafters looking to develop their skills while creating practical, functional items.
What is Being Made
This pattern creates a crochet washcloth or dishcloth—a practical, everyday item suitable for kitchen use or personal care. The design is straightforward enough for beginners while offering opportunities for creative expression through border variations and color combinations.
Techniques and Approach
The Washcloth 3 Series 2 pattern emphasizes border techniques as its primary focus. Seona Roberts has selected borders that are intentionally designed to be flexible and forgiving, requiring no overly specific stitch counts. This approach makes the pattern highly adaptable: crafters can add borders to projects with varying stitch counts without needing to adjust the core border pattern significantly. The series is built around the concept of mix-and-match customization, allowing makers to experiment with multiple border rounds and color combinations tailored to their specific project needs. Larger projects can accommodate additional border rounds, while smaller projects work well with fewer rounds.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches presented in US terminology:
- Slip stitch (ss) – used for joining and finishing
- Chain (ch) – the foundation stitch for creating the base of the work
- Single crochet (sc) – a basic, tight stitch
- Half double crochet (hdc) – a medium-height stitch
- Double crochet (dc) – a taller stitch for more open fabric
- Treble (tr) – an even taller stitch for creating lacy effects
- Double treble (dtr) – the tallest stitch included, for dramatic height variation
The pattern provides both US and UK terminology conversions for all stitches, ensuring clarity for international crafters.
Materials Required
The Washcloth 3 Series 2 pattern calls for specific materials to achieve the intended results:
- Yarn: 100% cotton in 10ply / worsted / aran weight. The pattern recommends Knit Picks Dishie as a suitable yarn choice, though any cotton yarn of equivalent weight can be substituted. Cotton is ideal for dishcloths and washcloths because of its absorbency and durability.
- Hook: 5mm crochet hook, appropriately sized for the specified yarn weight
- Finishing tool: A needle for weaving in ends after completion
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner level, making it accessible to new crocheters while still offering room for creative exploration and skill development through border experimentation.
Pattern Flexibility and Customization
One of the standout features of this pattern is its built-in flexibility. Crafters are encouraged to mix and match border styles and color combinations based on their preferences and the specific project they're embellishing. The adaptable nature of the borders means that stitch count variations won't compromise the final result, reducing the pressure on beginners to achieve perfect precision. This forgiving approach makes the pattern ideal for learning while maintaining the satisfaction of creating a finished, functional item.
