Product Description

Wally the walrus was fed up with lockdown. He packed his little suitcase, jumped onto the first iceberg he could find and off he went. He visited Ireland first and then moved on to Tenby where he stayed for a while. Now he’s on his travels again. He popped into Cornwall to say hello and then headed off to France, who knows where he’ll turn up next! He is just over 12 inches long - including flippers.

The pattern uses UK terminology (US terminology is also available as a separate listing) and can be downloaded after purchase. It is clear to follow with detailed instructions and lots of pictures for step by step making and assembly. There are also picture instructions for colour change, back loop only and front post stitch. I have made Wally using Scheepjes Softfun & Softfun Denim (DK weight yarn) - details in pattern.

Stitches/techniques used in this pattern: slip stitch, magic ring, double crochet, half treble, increase, decrease (dc2tog), colour change, back loop only, front post stitch

Wally the Walrus - Amigurumi Crochet Pattern

What is Being Made

Wally the Walrus is a charming amigurumi toy designed by Little Green Bear. This crocheted stuffed animal walrus measures just over 12 inches long, including flippers, when made with the recommended materials. The pattern tells the whimsical story of Wally's travels during lockdown, visiting Ireland, Tenby, Cornwall, and France, making this an engaging project for crafters who enjoy creating character-driven soft toys with personality and narrative appeal.

Craft and Technique

This is a crochet project using the amigurumi technique, which is the Japanese art of crocheting small, stuffed three-dimensional toys and creatures. Amigurumi involves working in continuous rounds to create seamless, compact fabric that is then stuffed to form sculptural shapes. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that crafters should have foundational crochet knowledge before beginning this pattern, as amigurumi requires understanding of shaping techniques, increases, and decreases to achieve the walrus's distinctive body proportions and flipper details.

Stitches and Construction

While the complete stitch list is not fully visible in the provided pattern excerpt, amigurumi projects typically employ fundamental crochet stitches including single crochet for the main fabric structure, as well as increases and decreases for shaping the walrus's body, head, flippers, and facial features. The pattern uses UK terminology, which is important for crafters to note, as UK and US crochet terminology differ significantly in stitch names and gauges.

Materials and Yarn

Wally the Walrus is designed to be made with DK weight yarn, which creates a fabric with good stitch definition and appropriate density for a stuffed toy. The designer recommends specific Scheepjes Softfun yarn colors:

  • Light Brown: Scheepjes Softfun Denim – Beige (508), 50g
  • Dark Brown: Scheepjes Softfun – Dijon (2635), 50g
  • White: Scheepjes Softfun – Lace (2426), 50g
  • Black: A small quantity of any black yarn for the nose detail

The multi-color construction allows crafters to create the walrus's realistic coloring, with the light brown forming the primary body, dark brown for accent areas, white for belly and facial details, and black for the nose. A crochet hook appropriate for DK weight yarn (typically a 3.5–4mm hook, though the exact size should be confirmed in the full pattern) will be required to complete this project.

Pattern Format

This pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, making it accessible for digital reference during the crafting process. The PDF format allows crafters to print the pattern for convenient reference at their work station or view it on digital devices while crocheting.
