Product Description
It is said that many of the stitches used in Aran knitting are lucky symbols for the wearer. For instance, diamonds represent wealth and success, while cables are for strength, safety, and luck. This pattern incorporates such traditional designs into extra-cosy hiking socks loaded with good omens for the new year. Knit in worsted weight at a tight gauge, they are a great quick knit for men or women.
The socks are knit from the top down with a ribbing pattern at the top, back of calf, and ankle, and a cable / diamond pattern at the shin. The heel is the V-heel, the designer’s favorite, and is combined with an extra-squishy stitch pattern on the flap for maximum comfort. Because these are working socks, the foot and toe are in Stockinette Stitch.
Walking into the New Year Socks by Katherine Vaughan
What is Being Made
Walking into the New Year is a pair of lucky symbol socks designed by Katherine Vaughan. These are extra-cosy hiking socks knit from the top down, incorporating traditional Aran knitting patterns believed to bring good fortune to the wearer. The socks feature a ribbing pattern at the top, cable and diamond motifs along the shin and ankle, and a structured heel. They are available in multiple sizes: Women's S, Women's M/Men's S, and larger sizes, making them suitable for both men and women.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs classic Aran knitting techniques, a traditional Irish method known for its decorative raised textures and symbolic stitchwork. The socks are knit top-down, a construction method that allows for easy customization of length and fit. The designer incorporates traditional lucky symbols through cable and diamond patterns, which are hallmarks of Aran design. According to the pattern, diamonds in Aran knitting represent wealth and success, while cables symbolize strength, safety, and luck—making these socks meaningful for someone starting a new year.
Stitches Used
- Ribbing: Used at the cuff for elastic stretch and a comfortable fit around the leg
- Cable stitches: Featured along the shin and ankle for traditional Aran texture and symbolic meaning
- Diamond patterns: Incorporated into the shin design as a classic Aran motif representing prosperity
Materials Required
These socks are knit in worsted weight superwash yarn, making them durable and easy to care for. The pattern calls for approximately 175 to 300 yards (160 to 275 meters) of yarn depending on size. Knitters will need US 5 / 3.75mm double-pointed needles or circular needles sized to match gauge. The pattern notes that circular needles or the Magic Loop method can be used as alternatives to traditional double-pointed needles. Additional supplies include stitch markers to track pattern repeats and a cable needle for managing cable stitches. A yarn needle is needed for weaving in ends.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters with some experience. The combination of ribbing, cables, and diamond patterns requires familiarity with these stitch techniques, though the straightforward top-down construction and clear sizing options make the project manageable for those ready to advance beyond basic sock knitting.
