Product Description
This is the ninth in my washcloth series! I have a new one coming out every month. These have been designed to help crocheters expand on their skill set by playing with stitches and stitch designs that may be new to them while creating something that is useful.
This design uses front post double crochet (front post treble) to create a version of the waffle stitch.
Waffle Washcloth by Seona Roberts
What is Being Made
The Waffle Washcloth is a crochet project designed by Seona Roberts that creates a deliciously squishy, textured fabric suitable for use as a functional washcloth or as part of a larger blanket project. The finished piece measures approximately 26cm x 26cm, making it a practical size for everyday use in the kitchen or bathroom.
Techniques Used
This project features the waffle stitch technique as its primary construction method. The waffle stitch creates a distinctive three-dimensional, squishy fabric with excellent texture and absorbency. The pattern also incorporates front post stitches to build the characteristic raised pattern that defines the waffle stitch structure. The designer notes that this is a variation of the waffle stitch that she selected after exploring several options, chosen specifically for its ability to produce a beautifully textured, functional fabric.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs the following crochet stitches in US terminology:
- Slip Stitch (ss) — used for joining and seamless transitions
- Chain (ch) — the foundation stitch; the initial chain must be any uneven number to allow proper pattern repeat
- Single Crochet (sc) — a basic short stitch used in the pattern structure
- Double Crochet (dc) — a medium-height stitch incorporated into the waffle stitch pattern
- Treble (tr) — a taller stitch used to create height variation in the waffle texture
- Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc) — works around the post of the previous row's stitch to create dimensional texture
- Front Post Treble (fptr) — the taller version of the front post stitch, essential for building the raised waffle pattern
Materials and Tools
This project is worked using a 100g ball of 100% cotton yarn in aran or worsted weight. The designer used KnitPicks Dishie, a cotton yarn specifically designed for dishcloths and washcloths. A 5mm crochet hook is required for working with this yarn weight. A needle for weaving in ends completes the basic materials list.
Difficulty Level and Pattern Notes
This is an intermediate-level crochet project, suitable for crafters with foundational crochet skills who are ready to work with post stitches and more complex stitch combinations. An important pattern note indicates that if you wish to adjust the finished size, the initial chain must be any uneven number to maintain proper pattern repeat. Additionally, the ch2 turning chain is not counted as a stitch, which is a crucial detail for maintaining accurate stitch counts throughout the project.
About the Designer
This pattern is from Seona Roberts, an independent designer. The project is part of the Honouring M.E. collection, published in 2020.
