Product Description
These hats have many names depending on what century you are in and which part of the world. Whether you know them as a Voyageur cap, a tuque, a double cap or a sailor's cap, this pattern is based on surviving caps from the seventeeth and eighteenth centuries and is accompanied by historical notes and references.
Note: A lot of people are finding these are running a little big, this is fine if you are going to be fulling down a lot for a weatherproof hat, but if your plan is to full only lightly then I suggest making a slightly smaller size.
Voyageur Cap by Sally Pointer
What is Being Made
The Voyageur cap, also known as a Double Tuque, Sailor's Cap, or Stocking Cap, is a historically inspired knitted hat pattern designed by Sally Pointer. This cap style was particularly popular during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and is suitable for period costume wear. The design features a construction method that is deceptively simple despite its elegant appearance, making it an accessible project for knitters with foundational skills.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This pattern employs five double pointed needles for construction, which allows for seamless, circular knitting in the round. This technique eliminates the need for seaming and creates a continuous fabric from the cast-on edge to the crown. The cap is worked using straightforward knitting methods that require no complex stitch patterns or fancy techniques, making it ideal for intermediate-level knitters who have mastered basic knitting fundamentals.
Stitches Used
The Voyageur cap pattern utilizes basic knitting stitches only. No advanced or decorative stitches are required for this design. The simplicity of the stitch work is intentional, allowing the knitter to focus on shaping and construction while still achieving an authentic historical silhouette.
Materials
This pattern is worked with aran weight yarn, which provides appropriate drape and structure for the cap's intended design. Five double pointed needles in the appropriate size for aran yarn are required to complete this project.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for knitters with basic skills who are ready to progress beyond simple projects. The straightforward stitch work combined with the circular needle technique makes this an excellent intermediate project that does not require mastery of complex stitch patterns.
