Viks Sweater by HelstrupDesign
What Is Being Made
Viks is a men's knitted sweater designed by HelstrupDesign, available in six sizes ranging from Small to XXXL. The finished garment features a chest width between 106 and 146 centimeters and a length between 63 and 75 centimeters, depending on size selection. This is a classic pullover sweater constructed using the round knitting method, making it an ideal project for knitters with intermediate skill levels.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The Viks sweater is constructed primarily using circular knitting techniques, which allows the body to be worked seamlessly in the round. The pattern begins with a loosely cast-on foundation of 196 to 270 stitches (depending on size), then continues with ribbed sections that provide elasticity and structure to the finished garment. Circular needles in two sizes—one 60 or 80 centimeter needle for the main body and one 40 centimeter needle for smaller circumferences—allow the knitter to transition smoothly between different sections. Double-pointed needles can be substituted for the shorter circular needle if preferred. The use of stitch markers helps track pattern repeats and the beginning of each round, ensuring consistent shaping throughout the project.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch pattern is worked at a gauge of 18½ stitches and 35 rows per 10 by 10 centimeters (4 by 4 inches). The sweater incorporates ribbed knitting, which typically alternates knit and purl stitches to create vertical columns of texture. This ribbed construction provides stretch and recovery, making the garment comfortable to wear. The main pattern section follows this gauge specification, and knitters are advised to always swatch and adjust needle size as needed, since individual gauge varies from knitter to knitter.
Yarn and Materials
Viks is designed for aran weight yarn, specifically wool or wool-blend yarns that yield approximately 90 meters per 50 grams. Recommended yarn options include Jamieson's Shetland Heather, Peer Gynt from Sandnes, or Mor Aase from Sandnes. The pictured size medium sample was knitted using yarn from Sandnes. Total yardage requirements range from 600 to 650 grams for size Small up to 850 to 900 grams for size XXXL, providing ample material for all pattern pieces and finishing.
Needles and Notions
Construction requires 4 millimeter circular knitting needles in two lengths: one 60 or 80 centimeter needle for the main body sections and one 40 centimeter needle for ribbed cuffs and necklines, or double-pointed needles of the same gauge as an alternative. Additional notions include stitch markers to denote the beginning of rounds and pattern repeats, and a yarn needle for weaving in loose ends upon completion. Proper needle selection is critical; knitters should test their gauge with their chosen needles and yarn combination and adjust size if necessary to match the pattern's specified gauge.
Difficulty Level
This sweater is rated as an intermediate knitting project, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable working with circular needles and in-the-round construction. The combination of ribbed and main pattern sections, along with the seamless construction method, provides a solid challenge without requiring advanced techniques such as complex colorwork or intricate lace patterns.
