Vienna Socks by Iglinz Crafts

Project Overview

Vienna Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for a pair of relaxing, meditative socks designed by Iglinz Crafts. Inspired by the designer's train journey to Vienna, these socks feature a straightforward construction that works well for knitters seeking a mindful, low-stress project. The pattern is classified as adventurous beginner difficulty, making it accessible to knitters who have basic sock-knitting experience but are ready to develop their skills further.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a pair of adult medium-sized socks using the cuff-down construction method. The socks are worked in the round on double-pointed needles (DPNs), a traditional technique that creates seamless, tubular fabric ideal for sock construction. The finished socks showcase a textured stitch pattern that alternates between knit and purl stitches, creating visual interest while remaining simple enough to knit without constant pattern consultation.

Knitting Techniques

  • Working in the round: The socks are constructed using circular knitting on a set of 5 double-pointed needles, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a continuous tube of fabric.
  • Cuff-down construction: The pattern begins at the cuff (top of the sock) and progresses downward toward the foot and toe, a method that allows for easy adjustments and modifications.
  • Decreasing techniques: The pattern incorporates standard sock decreases including knit 2 stitches together (k2tog) and slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over (skp) for shaping the heel and toe areas.
  • Purl decreases: Purl 2 stitches together (p2tog) is used where decreases occur within purl sections of the stitch pattern.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch (k): The fundamental stitch forming the base of the sock fabric.
  • Purl stitch (p): Creates texture and visual contrast when alternated with knit stitches.
  • Slip stitch (sl): Used in decrease techniques to manipulate stitches without working them.
  • Knit 2 together (k2tog): A right-leaning decrease worked by inserting the needle through two stitches and knitting them as one.
  • Purl 2 together (p2tog): The purl equivalent of k2tog, used for decreases within purl sections.
  • Slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over (skp): A left-leaning decrease that creates a balanced appearance when paired with k2tog decreases.

Stitch Pattern Details

The Vienna Socks feature a simple two-row repeat stitch pattern that alternates between (k1, p1) ribbing and its inverse (p1, k1) ribbing. Rounds 1 and 2 work knit 1, purl 1 to the end of the round, while rounds 3 and 4 reverse this sequence to purl 1, knit 1. This alternating pattern creates a textured, reversible fabric that is both visually appealing and meditative to knit, as the rhythm becomes automatic after the initial setup.

Materials and Specifications

Yarn: The pattern calls for Zwerger Garn Opal Hundertwasser Sparkle, a specialty yarn composition of 71% wool, 26% nylon, and 3% metallic content. This yarn weight is classified as 4-ply (fingering weight), providing excellent stitch definition and durability. One ball of 425 meters (465 yards) at 100 grams (3.53 ounces) is sufficient to complete an adult medium pair of socks.

Needles: The pattern requires a set of five 2.5mm (US size 1½) double-pointed needles, which is the standard needle size for working with 4-ply yarn and achieving the specified gauge.

Gauge: The pattern specifies a gauge of 28 stitches and 46 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) when worked in the stitch pattern. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for ensuring the finished socks fit properly.

Additional notions: A yarn needle (tapestry needle) is required for weaving in yarn ends upon completion.
