Victoria Shawl by Sincerely Pam
What Is Being Made
The Victoria Shawl is a crocheted triangular wrap designed in three versatile sizes: Child Small, Child Large, and Ladies. This shawl is worked from the bottom point upward, creating a classic silhouette that drapes beautifully. The finished dimensions range from a 42-inch wingspan for the Child Small size to an impressive 62-inch wingspan for the Ladies size, with corresponding heights of 20 inches, 24 inches, and 28 inches respectively.
Craft and Technique
This project is created using crochet, making it an accessible choice for beginner-level crafters. The shawl is constructed using a bottom-up building method, which is a fundamental crochet technique that allows the piece to expand gradually as you work upward. This approach makes it easy to achieve proper shaping and symmetry. The designer notes that gauge is not necessary for the success of this project, making it an excellent choice for those new to crochet who may find gauge swatching intimidating.
Stitches Used
The Victoria Shawl incorporates several essential crochet stitches to create its structure and texture:
- Chain stitch (ch): The foundation stitch used to begin the pattern
- Double crochet (dc): A primary stitch that builds height and creates the main fabric of the shawl
- Slip stitch (slst): Used for joining and finishing
- Puff stitch: A special decorative stitch that adds texture and visual interest to the design
The puff stitch is executed by repeating a yarn over and loop insertion sequence three times, then pulling through multiple loops in a specific manner to create a dimensional, puffy texture that distinguishes this shawl from simpler crochet patterns.
Materials
The Victoria Shawl is designed to be worked with DK weight yarn (also known as #3 yarn), a lightweight option that creates an elegant, drape-friendly fabric. The sample shown in the pattern was created using Lion Brand Yarn Mandala, demonstrating the beautiful results achievable with this yarn choice. Approximate yardage requirements are 550 yards for Child Small, 600 yards for Child Large, and 650 yards for Ladies sizes.
You will need a J (6 mm) crochet hook to work this pattern, along with a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and a measuring tape to verify finished dimensions. The designer notes that any weight yarn can be substituted, offering flexibility for crafters who wish to experiment with different yarn options to achieve varying drape and finished sizes.
