Product Description
Combine a dynamic herringbone pattern with a stripe and you have VERVE. The adult hat is knit in the round with three colors of Aran weight yarn. Select high contrast colors for the herringbone section for the most impact. Want to add some moxie? Top it off with a spiky long haired pom!
Sizing is for an adult M/L hat. Smaller or larger hat needed? Adjust the quantity of cast on stitches in increments of 8 stitches. Looking for a more fitted beanie? Reduce the stripe pattern sets to three or four.
Techniques include single row jogless stripes and slipped stitches. A chart is included for the stranded colorwork. Helpful links are included.
VERVE Knit Hat by Knits from MI Woods
What Is Being Made
VERVE is an intermediate-level knit hat designed by Carole Callert of Knits from MI Woods. This adult-sized hat features finished measurements of 9.5 inches wide by 9 inches high (24 cm x 23 cm) and is knitted in the round using circular needles. The design offers the option to customize with a decorative pom, such as the faux-fur Furreal Pom in Panther shown in the pattern.
Techniques and Stitches Used
VERVE combines multiple advanced knitting techniques to create visual interest and texture. The hat features a dynamic herringbone pattern worked in combination with stripes, creating a sophisticated colorwork design. The pattern includes helpful instructional links for knitting jogless single row stripes in the round, a technique that eliminates the visible jog that typically occurs when changing colors at the beginning of a round. Additionally, the design incorporates stranded colorwork, a method where multiple yarn colors are carried across the back of the work to create intricate patterned designs. The base fabric is worked in stockinette stitch (St st), which provides a smooth, classic knit surface.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This hat is knitted using Aran weight yarn, which is a medium-heavy yarn weight ideal for creating structured, durable garments. The pattern calls for Rico Essentials Soft Merino Aran, a yarn composed of 100% Merino Wool. Three coordinating colors are used:
- C1 Saffron – 1 ball (66 yards / 50 g)
- C2 Natural – 1 ball (60 yards / 50 g)
- C3 Anthracite – 1 ball (97 yards / 50 g)
Needles and Gauge
The pattern requires both circular and double-pointed needles in two sizes. US 6 (4 mm) 16-inch circular needles are used for the initial cast-on and ribbing sections, while US 7 (4.5 mm) 16-inch circular needles are used for the main body of the hat. US 7 (4.5 mm) double-pointed needles are employed for the crown decreases when the stitch count becomes too small for circular needles. The gauge is 20 stitches and 24 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch when worked with the larger needles in the round. Achieving correct gauge is essential for obtaining the proper finished hat size.
Additional Notions and Finishing
Beyond yarn and needles, the pattern requires a stitch marker to track the beginning of each round. An optional pom can be added to the crown for extra visual impact; the pattern demonstrates this with a faux-fur option such as the Furreal Pom in Panther from Knitting Fever, though knitters may substitute with yarn-based poms or other decorative toppers. The pattern notes that wet blocking helps finish the hat, a technique that involves dampening the finished knit and reshaping it to even out stitches and improve the overall appearance.
Skill Level and Pattern Format
VERVE is rated as an intermediate knitting project, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle colorwork and more complex stitch patterns. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, allowing knitters to access instructions digitally and print them as needed. This independent designer pattern from Knits from MI Woods combines technical skill with creative design to produce a hat with personality and style.
