Product Description
Verse is a reversible hat and cowl which are knitted using only knits and purls with a simple eyelet edging / brim. As long as you weave in your ends carefully, there is no reason why both sides of the hat and cowl can’t be worn. Two in one!
The cowl comes with two sizes. A long cowl (pictured) which can wrap twice around for extra warmth, or a short, tug over the head and go, cowl. Knitted in Aran weight yarn on 4.5mm (US 7) circular needles, Verse is perfect for a beginner stepping into the world of knitting in the round.
Both the hat and the cowl can be purchased separately if preferred.
Verse Hat & Cowl Set by Kelly Menzies
Project Overview
The Verse Hat & Cowl Set is an intermediate-level knitting design that combines two coordinating accessories in a single pattern. This downloadable PDF includes instructions for creating both a fitted hat and a matching cowl, allowing knitters to make the pieces separately or as a complete set. Originally published in Let's Knit! Magazine in October 2014, this design offers flexibility with two cowl size options to suit different preferences and yarn quantities.
What You'll Create
Hat: A classic knit hat with a finished circumference of 51 cm (20 inches) and a height of 22 cm (8.5 inches). The hat is designed to fit comfortably as a standard adult size.
Cowl: A versatile neck accessory available in two sizes. The small cowl measures 59 cm (23.25 inches) in circumference before blocking and 62 cm (24.5 inches) after blocking, with a width of 28 cm (11 inches) pre-blocking and 30 cm (11.75 inches) post-blocking. The large cowl option provides more generous dimensions at 125 cm (49.25 inches) pre-blocking circumference and 132 cm (52 inches) after blocking, with a width expanding from 32 cm (12.5 inches) to 34 cm (13.25 inches).
Knitting Techniques
This intermediate pattern employs circular knitting methods, utilizing both circular needles and double-pointed needles to construct seamless pieces from the top down or in the round. The pattern incorporates stitch manipulation techniques typical of intermediate-level designs, requiring knitters to be comfortable reading written instructions and managing stitch markers throughout the project.
Stitches and Stitch Pattern
The Verse Hat & Cowl Set features a pattern stitch that creates visual interest while remaining accessible to intermediate knitters. The pattern uses fundamental knitting abbreviations including knit (K), purl (P), and decreases such as K2TOG (knit two stitches together). The gauge is worked at 19 stitches by 25 rows over a 10 by 10 centimeter (4 by 4 inch) swatch in the pattern stitch using 4.5mm needles.
Yarn and Materials
Yarn Weight: Aran weight yarn is used throughout this project, providing a medium thickness that works up relatively quickly while maintaining good stitch definition.
Yardage Requirements: The hat alone requires 226 meters (248 yards) of yarn. For the cowl, the small size needs 370 meters (405 yards), while the large size requires 738 meters (808 yards). When combining pieces, the hat with small cowl totals 596 meters (653 yards), and the hat with large cowl requires 964 meters (1056 yards).
Yarn Shown: The pattern is photographed in West Yorkshire Spinners Blue Faced Leicester Aran in the shade Burnt Orange, showcasing how the pattern stitch and color work together in a finished piece.
