Project Overview
The Verity Cardi and Hat (Bc115) is a coordinating knitted set designed for infants aged 0-18 months. This downloadable PDF pattern features a lace-patterned cardigan paired with a matching hat, offering a sophisticated yet practical design for the youngest knitters' wardrobes. The set is sized to fit chest measurements ranging from 35 cm to 50 cm, accommodating growth from newborn through 18 months.
Cardigan Construction
The cardigan component showcases a delicate lace pattern as its primary design feature. The garment is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The lace detailing adds visual interest while maintaining breathability, making it an elegant choice for layering over other infant garments.
Hat Design
The matching hat completes the coordinated set, featuring the same lace pattern aesthetic as the cardigan. This creates a cohesive, professionally designed look when worn together.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
- Primary Stitches: The pattern utilizes stocking stitch (stockinette stitch) as the foundation, worked by knitting right-side rows and purling wrong-side rows for a smooth, classic fabric
- Lace Work: Yarn round needle (yrn) increases are incorporated to create the lace patterning throughout the design
- Textural Detail: Bobble stitches (MB) add dimensional texture; each bobble is created by knitting into the front and back of a stitch twice to create four stitches, then working short rows before decreasing all four stitches together
- Garter Stitch: Garter stitch (knitting every row) is used in selected areas for structure and definition
- Decreasing: Strategic decreasing techniques shape the garment pieces
- Slip Stitches: Slip stitch techniques are employed for neat edge finishing
Yarn and Needles
This pattern is worked in 4-ply yarn weight, a lightweight option ideal for delicate infant garments. The specified tension is 28 stitches and 36 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) when worked in stocking stitch on 3.25 mm (US size 3) needles. Achieving proper tension is essential for the garment to fit correctly across the five available sizes.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Verity Cardi and Hat requires competence with basic knitting stitches and the ability to read pattern abbreviations and follow lace charting. The inclusion of bobble stitches and lace increases adds complexity beyond beginner patterns, making this suitable for knitters with some experience.
Pattern Format
The Bc115 pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF file, offering convenient access to the complete instructions, measurements, and abbreviation key needed to complete both the cardigan and hat.
