What is Being Made

Verdant Echo is a knitted cowl designed by independent designer Claire Slade. This one-piece circular cowl captures the essence of spring with its nature-inspired design featuring reflecting leaves. The cowl is worked in the round and offers four different circumference options to suit various fit preferences, ranging from 23.5 inches to 36.5 inches around, with a finished height of 10 inches.

Knitting Techniques Used

This project employs stranded colourwork as its primary technique, a method where two colors of yarn are carried simultaneously around the work to create intricate patterned designs. The cowl is knit in the round using circular needles, which creates a seamless tubular fabric. This construction method is ideal for cowls as it eliminates the need for seaming and ensures a smooth, continuous garment.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches including knit and purl stitches. The stranded colourwork technique involves alternating between a main color (MC) and contrast color (CC) to build the leaf pattern motifs throughout the design. Cast-on and bind-off techniques are used to begin and finish the cowl.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

• Yarn Weight: Sportsweight yarn in two colors
• Yardage Requirements: 140 to 230 yards (128 to 211 meters) each of main color and contrast color, depending on size selected
• Needles: 3mm (US 2.5) and 3.25mm (US 3) circular needles, 16 inches / 40cm length
• Gauge: 26 stitches by 28 rows equals 4 inches / 10cm in stranded colourwork, when blocked

Skill Level and Design Details

Verdant Echo is classified as a beginner-level project, making it accessible to knitters new to stranded colourwork techniques. The sample shown in the pattern was knitted using Ullcentrum 2ply Sportsweight yarn in the shades Grassy for the main color and Lightest Grey for the contrast color. The design celebrates spring's transitional nature, where leaves shift from frozen stillness to vibrant green growth, reflected in the cowl's leaf-motif colorwork pattern.
