Product Description

This blanket is designed for my newborn daughter to make her first summer days comfortable and cozy. It has a seed stitch border, and a stocking stitch centre which means that it’s an easy knitting work. The vertical lines are embroidered with a crochet hook, and bears are embroidered using duplicate stitch technique. The pattern includes images of embroidery process. It also includes bear chart, so you could use it when working on other projects.

It’s knitted with Gazzal Baby Cotton XL yarn, but you could use any yarn of your choice and your favourite colour combination, the only thing you would need is to adjust number of stitches.

Varvara Baby Blanket by Mr. Kaplan

Project Overview

The Varvara Baby Blanket is an intermediate-level knitting project designed by Mr. Kaplan for those seeking a cheerful and kind aesthetic. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished blanket measuring 72cm x 80cm, making it an ideal size for a baby blanket or small throw. The design combines classic knitting techniques with decorative embroidery elements to create a charming finished piece.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a rectangular baby blanket featuring a decorative border and embroidered embellishments. The blanket includes embroidered bear motifs and vertical lines that add visual interest and personality to the finished textile. The design balances simplicity with thoughtful decorative details, making it suitable for gifting or personal use.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Worked Flat: The blanket is constructed using flat knitting on straight needles, allowing for straightforward construction without the need for circular needles or complex shaping.
  • Seed Stitch Border: A textured seed stitch creates the border, providing visual definition and a finished edge to the blanket.
  • Stocking Stitch Center: The main body of the blanket uses stocking stitch, creating a smooth, classic knitted fabric that showcases the yarn beautifully.
  • Embroidery Embellishment: Vertical lines are embroidered using a crochet hook, adding linear design elements to the finished blanket.
  • Duplicate Stitch: Bear motifs are added using the duplicate stitch technique, a form of embroidery worked directly over the knitted stitches to create detailed decorative elements.

Stitches and Abbreviations

The pattern uses fundamental knitting stitches and abbreviations including:

  • k = knit stitch
  • p = purl stitch
  • sl1k = slip 1 stitch as if to knit
  • st(s) = stitch(es)
  • CO = cast on
  • BO = bind off

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Varvara Baby Blanket is worked using DK weight yarn, which creates a lightweight yet durable fabric suitable for baby items. The sample shown in the pattern was created with Gazzal Baby Cotton XL, a yarn blend consisting of 50% cotton and 50% acrylic, offering both breathability and durability.

Yarn quantities needed:

  • Yarn A: 6 balls of color #3437 (approximately 630 meters or 690 yards total from 6 x 50g balls)
  • Yarn B: 1 ball of color #3434 (10g of dark brown yarn for embroidered bear noses and eyes)

Tools and Equipment

  • Needles: 4.00mm (US 5) straight needles for main knitting
  • Crochet Hook: 3.50mm hook used for embroidering the vertical lines
  • Tapestry Needle: For weaving in ends and working the duplicate stitch embroidery

Gauge and Tension

The pattern specifies a gauge of approximately 18 stitches over 10cm (4 inches) when measured over stocking stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is important for obtaining the intended finished dimensions of 72cm x 80cm. Knitters should swatch before beginning the project to ensure their tension matches the pattern requirements.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the main knitting techniques (knit and purl stitches) are fundamental, the combination of different stitch patterns, embroidery techniques including duplicate stitch, and the overall project size make it suitable for knitters with some experience. Those new to embroidery techniques may find the decorative elements provide a gentle introduction to these skills.
