Product Description
Unity is a wonderfully cozy open-front cardigan that invites you to snuggle up in it during the colder seasons. It’s knit from the top down, starting with the shawl collar, which is knit at the same time as the body - no picking up of stitches here later! Raglan increases gently shape the yoke before you separate the sleeves and the body. Sleeves are picked up after finishing the body and knit to a 3/4 length. Pockets are set in while you knit the body, so that you only pick them up at the end to work the pocket linings. The shawl collar, cuffs, hem and pockets all feature an easy-to-memorize zig-zag stitch which pops beautifully against the stockinette fabric of the body.
Recommended to be worn with approx. 44 cm / 17” positive ease at the bust.
Unity Open Cardigan by Crystal
Project Overview
Unity is a thoughtfully designed open cardigan created by independent designer Crystal Hiatt, originally published in Making Stories Magazine Issue 4. This knitting pattern celebrates comfort and inclusivity, featuring relaxed positive ease of up to 44 cm (17 inches) that allows for layering versatility. The cardigan is ideal for both casual lounging and as a quick layering piece for evening outings, making it a practical staple for any wardrobe.
Design Features
- Open cardigan silhouette with generous positive ease for comfortable, relaxed fit
- Draping sleeves that fall just below the elbows for an elegant, effortless aesthetic
- Large front pockets adding both functionality and visual interest
- Squishy rib design throughout, creating texture and visual movement
- Size-inclusive construction reflecting the designer's commitment to accessibility in knit fashion
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Unity employs a rib stitch pattern as its primary textural element. The squishy rib design creates a distinctive, tactile fabric with excellent drape and recovery. This stitch choice not only provides visual interest but also contributes to the cardigan's comfortable, forgiving fit. The ribbed construction allows the fabric to stretch and move with the body while maintaining its shape.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern is designed for DK weight yarn, a versatile medium weight that works beautifully for creating drape and definition in rib stitches. DK weight provides an ideal balance between stitch definition and fabric fluidity, making it perfect for showcasing the squishy rib texture while maintaining the cardigan's elegant drape.
Skill Level
Unity is rated as an intermediate difficulty knitting pattern. Knitters should be comfortable with basic stitches and shaping techniques to successfully complete this project. The rib stitch work is straightforward, though the overall construction and fit adjustments require intermediate-level understanding of garment construction principles.
Designer Philosophy
Crystal Hiatt designed Unity to address a significant gap in size-inclusive knitwear design. The cardigan represents more than a functional wardrobe piece—it embodies a philosophy of inclusivity and community. The squishy rib design serves as a visual metaphor for makers joining together and crossing arms in unity, symbolizing a shared commitment to breaking down barriers related to size, race, sexuality, and other dimensions of human diversity within the maker community.
